Today we’d like to introduce you to Bom Kim.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always wanted to become a singer when I was little. Singing made me feel good and I felt like I was good at it. So, my family used to live in California when we first moved to the United States and my dad got a better job in Atlanta, Georgia so our whole family had to move to Atlanta during my junior year in high school.
When we first moved there, I just didn’t feel like I fit in. I also felt like an outsider in school and I felt like there was nothing to do other than music. So, I started getting into Korean hip hop for the first time and started writing lyrics. I wouldn’t call that real music now but I started writing like that. Then I met people who were like me in Atlanta. They all wanted to work in the music industry, to become singers, dancers, producers, or DJs or whatever. I felt like I fit into that environment better than school. And I started going to this studio my old friend used to own. So, I started making my own music there. In the beginning, things were interesting and fun but later on, they started accepting more people that were new and things became chaotic. Meanwhile, My old producer friend was going through depression and started to take his depression pills. I was too young at that time and I didn’t really know what was actually going on.
Then at one point, I realized that I didn’t want to be in that position down the road. I still loved music, but I wanted to be in a better position where I can learn or do music professionally. I started researching music schools where I can learn how to create and do music professionally. I wanted to move out from Atlanta either way, so I made plans in my head and saved some money to move out. I looked into schools in New York, Georgia, and California. Georgia had no real music school and New York was too expensive for me to move out so I decided to move to California. I attended Musicians Institute in Hollywood and another school that closed down while I was attending in Pasadena called Shepherd University. I met real people who work in the music industry in California and here I am.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road for me. I always had to worry about paying rent and surviving out here other than music. And that was never easy. The first school I attended closed down during my second semester so I had to stop going to school for a year so I can save up for a different school. I would say money was the biggest obstacle for me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer, songwriter and an engineer. I am very proud of my top lining and engineering skills. I try to become the best version of myself and I hear many people saying that I have my own sound, so I think that makes me more unique than other artists in LA. I also have a lot of experiences and stories to tell. Also, I could say that I have a unique voice that many people find interesting.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see myself having a lot of successful records and hearing my music playing everywhere in public. I also want to grow with my team WD, ADN, Hyejin, Aleyna, and other artist and producer friends :]
And I would love to shout out to one of the best managers in the game WD!
I also just dropped my first mixtape on SoundCloud and link to that is https://soundcloud.com/bomsbloom/sets/mixtape-ep1-my-past-days.
