Today we’d like to introduce you to Nelcie Souffrant.
Hi Nelcie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Haitian American Actress who continues to follow her dreams in the film industry. Growing up, I experienced seeing life in a predominantly black neighborhood and predominantly white neighborhood and spent my summer months in Haiti. These experiences all shaped me, my character, and my drive.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My biggest challenge was leaving my family in New York and traveling across country to pursue my dream. I moved over 3,000 miles away from my best friends; my mother, father and brother. I came across country and stayed with friends who knew my situation and my goals. During this time, my dog was stolen. My dog was my child. I went through a depressed stage during this moment. When I moved, I only had a few dollars to my name. However, I was able to make it through with the foundation of my friends here in Los Angeles. My friends were like my family, and thats what kept me grounded.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Well, you can find me in the hit film ZOLA, as “Gail”; Directed by Janicza Bravo and produced by A24 Films.
I am also in the “The Cypher” featured on HBO Max.
I’ve directed a short film that has went to over 12 film festivals. I’ve received awards for Best Young Filmmaker and Best Inspirational Short. I was nominated at Urbanworld , one of the largest film festivals.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson that I learned is that you have to take a leap of faith. Sometimes not being complacent with your environment is the biggest motivator. Sometimes you must leave your comfort zone and go out there and chase your dreams. Whether your dreams are acting, sports or even medical school. Sometimes the best medical school may not be where you are. Sometimes you have to leave your comfort place and explore. You have to make yourself comfortable with being uncomfortable. Another lesson I learned is that we all have a story. We all grow from things of our past. We all make mistakes. And it’s ok. I am ok with being perfectly imperfect. Just learn from them.
