Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellie Williams.
Hi Ellie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was introduced to music at a very young age by my father who used to play guitar to me and my sister to get us to sleep. Growing up, I would always been writing songs or playing guitar hero and putting on coffee table performances with the Swiffer as a microphone. When I was around 12 years old, I started taking lessons in guitar, vocals and piano and shortly after began performing live in various restaurants/coffee shops in my hometown of Lawrence, KS. When I turned 14, I moved out to California to pursue music more professionally and was put into studios and sessions with various producers to write and record. I attended a performing arts school in Orange County called OCSA (Orange County School of the Arts) which gave me the foundation I needed to get into the Popular Music Program at USC (University of Southern California) where I attend currently as a rising Junior. I continued to work with producers throughout High School and was eventually linked to one that would end up helping me release four singles: Partly, Live Cinema, Perfect Playlist, and Clueless over the course of my freshman year at USC.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, growing up in a conservative state definitely influenced what I felt comfortable sharing with my environment. It was stifling, lyrically. I vividly remember telling my friends, teachers, coaches that my songs were written about the Moon and not a girl with the alias ‘Luna’ and constantly feeling like I had to change pronouns or the names in order to be able to share my music. However, once I moved to the performing arts school in California, I definitely opened up and was able to be my more authentic self lyrically, feeling comfortable talking about relationships or crushes I was experiencing with other girls.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an LA-based singer/songwriter, I specialize in love songs and am known for my single Clueless accumulating nearly 2 million streams on Spotify. I’m proud of how authentic I’ve been able to be lyrically through sharing my experiences in wlw relationships. Growing up, the only queer artist I knew of was Hayley Kiyoko, and I feel honored to be able to add my name to the list of queer artists today that are available to listen to.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has played a huge role in my life both in how I’m able to live my most authentic life and also how I’m able to pursue music to the extent that I am currently. I have an incredibly supportive family that has always pushed me to be myself and pursue music and without that foundation, I definitely would not be where I am today.
