Today we’d like to introduce you to India Hawkins.
Hi India, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Dance has always been something I enjoyed. From a young age, I use to choreograph to my dad’s music while he recorded in the studio. At this time in my life, I had never taken a dance class. But, I knew I could relate to dance and it fulfilled me more than anything else. In middle school, I was a part of the cheer and dance team for fun. In high school, I attempted to try out for volleyball but realized shortly after I belonged on the dance team. Although my technical training in dance came years later, I never gave up on what felt good to me and what I loved to do. I took dance classes at my junior college. When I transferred to a University, dance became my minor. Although I received my degree in Psychology, I decided to dance. It has not been an easy road trying to break back into the industry. Especially because I am a lot older than I was when I originally started. I am still not where I want to be. But, I believe if you really love something you should go for it full force. At least give it a shot and give it all you got! When you make it, you will realize it was all worth it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming a professional dancer is never easy for many reasons. There is so much we are responsible for as dancers. Health is important! You want to make sure you are in good physical and mental shape. It is important to LOOK good because our bodies are our instruments. We also have to be strong because dance can be physically and mentally demanding. When it comes to booking in the industry sometimes experience, training, age, look, and more play a factor in your success as a dancer. You also have to realize that we live in Los Angeles and everyone comes here to be a STAR. I have definitely struggled with all of these things. I have taken a break from dance a few times. But, I always come back because it is something that moves me! It is something I love and want to be successful at.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself a dancer and overall creative. I do work a 9-5 and I train in dance class at night. But, I consider myself a person who enjoys training, performing, collaborative projects, diy projects, fashion, design, traveling, and learning new things. I am still working on finding my niche!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Los Angeles is the land of opportunity! I was born and raised here, this will always be home. You get the best of both worlds here and there is so much to do. I love that it is so diverse. I learn things from so many different people. I enjoy being able to drive up to the snow one day and hit the beach on another day. The only thing I do not enjoy is how expensive it is to live here. I am sure y’all can relate! The cost of living makes it extremely hard to live on your own.
