Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Kohn.
Hi Gary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was a former film and TV producer who saw the intersection of tech and content coming together and became fascinated with the process. Travel has always been a passion of mine and something I did for months at a time in between shooting films. I spent about two years doing research and development on this business before I decided to do it full time. There is such a disconnect in how travelers are choosing their vacations and what companies are offering. We figured out a way to change that while also staying in line with our values as a company and being mindful of sustainability and responsible tourism.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. The amount of struggles is a laundry list! Fundraising, technology development, marketing, the major pivoting that covid required for us. But I will say it’s been a fun journey. I think it’s really all about mindset. Is the glass half empty or half full. It’s both really and it only matters which half I chose to focus on.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been known in film and TV mostly, first as an actor, which I did for many years and then a development executive, producer and fixer. I’ve consulted for almost every major studio and network in Hollywood and ran budgets and operations for almost all the films I produced. But what I think I really excelled at was story and content which was the exact skill needed for what we’re building at Luxury Travel Hackers. The emotional storytelling of travel makes it easier for consumers to connect to an experience they would like to have.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I grew up here and loved the diversity Los Angeles offers. I like that you can drive 1 hour in any direction and be somewhere really pretty and different looking. I love the weather. If I did have a gripe, it would be that the ocean water isn’t warmer and wish our beaches were more tropical.
