Check Out Luke Bishop’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Bishop.

Hi Luke, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up 30 minutes outside of D.C. in Centreville, VA. At a young age, I developed a disorder called Auditory Processing disorder, which affects how you take in/interpret sounds that you hear. It mainly affected me in situations where I would be in a conversation with someone, and there could be a lawnmower way off in the distance, and as I was looking at you, my mind would automatically fixate on that lawnmower to the point where I am tuning you out. It was hard to control as a child. It would also take me a while for my mind to interpret what you are asking me to do. You could ask me to “touch my head” and it would take about 5 seconds for me to finally realize what you are asking. I had to go to speech therapy, gymnastics, and other workshops to help align my mind/body to help with this, as it would affect most aspects of my life.

There was always one thing in my life, however, that I felt I could control myself, and that was music. Whenever there was music on, I felt that I could control myself and focus on what was playing. I instantly fell in love with music as a child, as my parents/older brother were massive fans of listening to music. It would be anything from Crosby, Stills, Nash, to The Offspring, to Matchbox Twenty. I just loved the instrumentation and melodies that I would hear.

My first instrument was a guitar that I got in 4th grade. It was a red B.C. Rich Warlock. I only got it because Mick Thompson from Slipknot had the same model, and I thought it was super tough, haha. I later picked up drums and bass as I got older.

During high school, I knew that I wasn’t interested in going to a 4-year college to follow some career I knew I wouldn’t enjoy. I knew I always wanted to work in music, whether it was playing or recording. Then sophomore year came around, and I was watching TV, and I saw an ad for a school called “Omega Studios”. It was an actual recording studio in Rockville, MD, that also served as a school for Audio Engineering. I immediately knew I wanted to go.

Attending Omega was an amazing experience. I got to learn how to properly record/mix artists and how to record on tape. It also opened my eyes to Post-Audio for Film/TV, which I immediately fell in love with, and knew it was a path that I wanted to follow.

As soon as I graduated, I moved to Los Angeles to find a career within tv/film, doing post-sound.

Anyone who knows that I have Auditory Processing finds it interesting and weird that I started working in sound, but at the same time knows that it makes sense. I think having to work on my focus all of those years helped me to really tune into songs and develop an ear for what made mixes work.

For the last six years, I have been working as a freelance Audio Engineer, recording/mixing/producing bands and artists, to also working on many short and full-length films as the sole audio guy. This entails sound editing, music editing, foley/sound design, and mixing the film. I love this work, and I always get super excited when a new project comes around that is a new experience for me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anyone who’s moved out to Los Angeles knows that it’s long and tough road to get into the career you inspire to get into.

I’ve had to work multiple jobs part-time jobs, draining through all of my money, racking up credit-card debt, etc… But I knew this is what I wanted and my true dream.

Anyone who works freelance also knows that you are obviously not going to get the dream gigs right off the bat and are probably not going to get paid for a while. It was probably about a year to two years before I actually started seeing money coming for projects that I was working on, as the gig opportunities don’t come too often, and you don’t want to lose the ones that you do get offered to work on.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I would like to think that I have many hats that I can wear under the umbrella of Audio Engineering and can wear them well.

Within music, I work as an engineer, producer, and mixer for artists and bands, mainly within the LA area. I also write songs under a group called “Key of Evergreen” where I feature wonderful vocalists from all around the area to sing over songs that I write and record on, as I cannot sing to save someone’s life. This project allows me to write whatever genre I am feeling in the moment. Most of the songs I’ve done are more on the emo and indie side, but the current EP I am working on is more of a synth pop/80’s pop type style of music.

Within film, I specialize in being able to take the raw audio of a project and elevate it to the final product. What this includes is sound editing, music editing, dialogue editing, foley, sound design, and mixing, the whole works I guess you can say.
