Rising Stars: Meet Kirsten Day

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirsten Day.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was recently looking through an old elementary school yearbook and it asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Seeing that even as a 2nd grader, my answer was “I want to be an actor” made me feel like I was living my purpose.

I’m currently a voice and screen actor living in Los Angeles, CA. People know me best for voicing Skipper in the Barbie movies, shows, and vlogs since 2018 OR for voicing Constance Von Nuvelle in Fire Emblem Three Houses. I also just won a bronze Telly Award for the web series #MarriedLife that I wrote, directed, produced, and starred in.

Before moving to LA, I lived in NYC and worked as a musical theatre actor for ten years, originating the role of Alicia in Nickelodeon’s touring production of Go Diego Go, Live and performing in other regional and touring productions. While in NYC, I started taking voiceover classes and booking small jobs here and there.

I was born in Covington, KY and luckily had some extremely supportive parents who put me in dance class at three years old, allowed me to do all of the theatre shows at my high school, and actually supported my choice to double major in acting and musical theatre in college. It’s because of their support that I am where I am today.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve never met an actor that hasn’t had a bumpy journey along the way. When I moved to NYC when I was 21, I had a waiting tables job before I had an apartment. It’s just the reality of the business.

What separates working actors from people who try and quit is the ability to deal with rejection. You have to go into every audition, do your best, and forget about it. If you think you’re going to book every job you audition for, you will be so disappointed. The goal is simply to do your best. If nothing happens after six months of auditions, change something up. Take a new class, find a new routine. Great things happen if you keep going, even through the rejection.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Since moving to LA seven years ago, I have voiced some of the most amazing characters in cartoons in video games. Voiceover has allowed me to grow as an actor in ways I never thought possible. All of that pent up creative energy actors carry around with them is welcome and encouraged in a VO booth. It’s an amazing balance of bringing grounded acting together with a character that might literally be flying around. I love voiceover so much that my husband and I opened up our own VO studio at the beginning of the pandemic called Sound On Studio. We make VO demos and teach really fun classes with some of the best working actors in the industry.

One of my most proud moments was when I got to tell my Mom I booked Skipper in Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures. I had a Skipper doll growing up and SHE had a Skipper doll growing up. Getting to tell her that was something I’ll never forget. An immensely proud moment.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
A fun fact that many people don’t know about me is that when I was nine years old, I had a baby sister with some very stinky diapers so I invented “The Diaper Changing Gas Mask” for an invention contest at school and won. A month later, someone from Late Night with David Letterman called me and asked me to be a Kid Inventor for a segment on his talk show. A week or so later, I was flown to NYC and was actually on the Letterman show talking about stinky diapers with a very loud dress my mom picked out and an unforgivable perm. (ps, my little sister is now a punk performer and film editor in NYC. and she still hasn’t forgiven me for talking about her diapers on national tv.)

Also, I am obsessed with birds. I have a little bird book and write in it every time I see a new bird in my neighborhood, with the date and time.
