Conversations with Eduardo Sánchez Flores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eduardo Sánchez Flores.

Hi Eduardo, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my career in film and photography through being exposed to the Latin dance community. There, I joined a dance team and we would perform at Latin Dance Festivals and socials. I had never filmed or photographed much in a serious way before that time, but I soon met a photographer named Raul Medrano and a videographer named Kyle Mikami who both helped mentor me as I began to learn how to capture dancers. From there, I fell in love with the craft and poured in countless hours of research and studying other content creators around the world. I received my first paid gig at one of these social events and I knew this was something I loved doing. I was not very good at first, frankly I really sucked, but through a relentless thrive to succeed I kept at it until I started to see the result I was hoping for. Later on, me and Raul partnered up to create and Co-Direct a media company we called Creators Lab. Once established as a professional media company in the Latin dance community, I wanted to venture out into other communities. I had previously worked as a Director at a restaurant but am now able to sustain myself through film full time. My scope of work now includes dance, music videos, product commercials, fitness content, weddings, and so much more. My ultimate goal is to direct and produce featured films.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has defiantly not been a smooth road to get to this point, and it won’t be smooth from here on out. There is a level of uncertainty that comes with being a full-time content creator. With no consistent 9-5 job, It can be tough to make ends meet at times. However, having experienced the life of being my own boss, setting my own hours, and working when I want to work, I would not sacrifice that freedom for a 9-5. Other challenges within my work that I face would sometimes be clients. Not everyone is the easiest to work with. Some clients at times have even not paid me for my work. Through these experiences and my own mistakes, I have learned how to take certain precautions to avoid miscommunication and establish a direct easy to follow contact.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love creating art for the sake of art. When I get an idea in my head, I love to pursue it until it becomes a reality. In 2020, I worked closely with some talented hip hop and contemporary dancers to create a short dance film entitled Breathe, a tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement. This project was very close to my heart and allowed us to express our frustration, sadness, and celebration for life through dance and film. Very proud of that whole team of amazing dancers for pouring their hearts into it.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I have learned throughout my journey would have to be learning to just create. The start is what stops most people from diving into their passions. We become too self-conscious of sharing our work and putting ourselves out there in such a vulnerable position for others to judge. The lesson I have learned is to try my best to just start the project, produce it, film it, edit and release. I will make countless mistakes I guarantee it, but through the process of doing it, I learn how to not make the same mistake. I then apply those lessons onto the following project which comes out better and better. The fear of failure and of making mistakes stops us from wanting to begin, but if we don’t start, then we will never grow. Through discomfort lies growth.
