Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Wright.
Hi Kyla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a particularly unique, maximalist style. I was the teenager with magazine clippings pasted to the walls and school notebooks covered in collage art, the young adult who gallery hopped for constant inspiration, and now the business owner who shares her specific point of view as a curator of really cool “stuff”. I split my time between working as a beauty industry marketer, a creative and cultural consultant, and as owner/founder of APARTMENT 119 — my hub for the dopest feel good home goods. Oh, and my living room is a giant DJ booth with over 1,000 vinyl records, so I think it’s safe to say I vibe through life on many different beats.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The thing that has been most challenging as an entrepreneur is splitting my time, energy and efforts across the many projects I have in motion at any given time. I want everything I touch to really, truly reach people, so it keeps me tightly bound to my work from end to end. In the end, it is always incredibly rewarding, so every struggle leads to new strengths.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
On the day-to-day, I lead an incredible team of women who work on special projects in the beauty space. Together, we dream up and create products and campaigns that excite the masses, oftentimes with bold color. The projects we work on are targeted to specific groups in popular culture that aren’t always spoken to by the beauty industry. We make it our mission to make people feel seen, welcomed, and celebrated through everything we do.
When doing creative consulting, I try to take the same approach as I do on my day job. I help others tell their stories and find ways to weave unique, compelling narratives together in ways that are undeniably DOPE. No matter who I’m working with, we take a “mood board approach” (as I call it) to creating something that draws people in, shows them something new, and leaves them absolutely shook afterward. I like to leave a lasting impression, always.
And with my home goods at APARTMENT 119, the same rules apply. I offer unique pieces that tap into the parts of ourselves that adulthood and ‘responsibility’ often force us to tuck away. I curate and create items that feel sophisticated and elegant but conjure feelings of nostalgia, empowerment and give you a sense of “my house, my rules” that you can’t get anywhere else. Deeply seeded into my 119 collections are practical reminders and mantras that keep my customers (homies, as I call them) coming back for more.
All around, I try to keep the good vibes flowing in everything I do.
What matters most to you?
Authenticity matters to me. Inclusion matters. Love, trust, unity, honesty, freedom, and empowerment – those things matter to me. Black Lives Matter to me a lot. And building creative community, creative equity, and a sense of purpose (regardless of class, education, privilege) all matter to me.
Be yourself. YOU MATTER.
