Today we’d like to introduce you to Them Fantasies.
Them Fantasies are an alternative pop and indie rock trio that emphasizes on playing with “the sauce”. While meeting in college, bassist and singer Dominic Cannarella and guitarist Eric McCoy combined their contrasting musical tastes together and went threw a stint of drummers before settling in with the energetic Max Meizlish. After studying abroad in Valencia, Spain and playing shows internationally, they completed two U.S. regional tours, collaborated with jazz virtuoso Jesus Molina, and landed a featured article in the critically acclaimed V Magazine. Them Fantasies combines indie rock, alternative pop, and funk to serve peculiar sounds with a chaser. After relocating to Los Angeles from Boston during Covid, they’ve found an enthusiastic new audience on Tik Tok and will be releasing singles and an EP throughout the coming months. Be sure to look out for their crazy on-stage antics, purple LED lights, and heartfelt music when live shows come back to Los Angeles.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The elephant in the room is the lack of live music. Them Fantasies shines the brightest under the excruciatingly hot stage lights, but that’s a problem for everyone right now. On the other hand, finding and developing your sound and artistry can be challenging and disheartening. People can find you and want you to make the same record over and over, and sometimes they won’t want you experimenting with different sounds and diving deeper into your own unique artistry. Lots of people, especially those outside the artistic community, can have a hard time growing alongside their favorite artists. At the end of the day, we think it’s all about staying in tune with yourself and doing what feels natural – not trying to be anyone else. Otherwise, moving and finishing up college during a pandemic was hectic to say the least, but we’re all grateful we’re out here and are able to work on this as much as we can while staying happy and healthy! That’s what matters most.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We make a pretty unique sound when our band’s influences range all over the place, from the Strokes to Thundercat and even Tyler, the Creator. We take a lot of pride in our live shows, where we utilize all kinds of antics to make the show the best it can be. We’ve worn animal slippers and stomped around a crowded basement with beer on the floor, and we’ve had some crazy crowd interaction + participation at festivals we’ve played in New England. We have a whole new light show for when we play live again, and we’re always looking for new ways of spicing up the stage. At our core, we are songwriters and performers just as much as we are instrumentalists. It affects the way we write with each other – trying to find the right balance between writing as songwriters and writing as instrumentalists will always be a lifelong pursuit for us!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Apart from all of us being jazz-trained session musicians, Dominic is also an actor and former ballet/tap dancer while Eric and Max were ice hockey players for years. We all co-write with other artists and songwriters in completely different genres while we’re not playing with each other. On top of that, Eric is a geography wizard, Max is a gourmet chef, and Dom is in a world-renowned a cappella group, Pitch Slapped.
