Hidden Gems: Meet Katelyn Dowling, Ph.D. of Sustainable Self

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Dowling, Ph.D.

Hi Katelyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a multi-passionate millennial businesswoman here on Earth to shake things up with my two secret weapons: compassion and insight.

When I moved to LA in 2009, I worked in online advertising for a while before going back to school for my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Alliant International University. For the last 12 years, I’ve been working with diverse people in community – and forensic – mental health settings. I have been of service to individuals and organizations ranging from immigrants seeking asylum and hardship waivers, to people convicted of sex offenses, and veterans in disaster relief. There are many disparities that exist in our society, making it quite uncommon for global business leaders to have lived-experience in the communities I have served. The result is often well-intentioned policies that fail to address the root cause of human suffering and ecological collapse.

It’s fairly nuanced to talk about these topics across cultures in a way that doesn’t piss people off. Requires a delicate balance of reverence, morbidity, and good old-fashioned telling it like it is. Mentors of mine, like Joanna Macy, talk about the importance of active hope in these complex times. In my work, I have found the word active to represent embodied.

The major through-thread in my professional journey is that I am skillful at transforming complex problems into simple solutions. My life and work is all about service to our shared humanity at this bifurcation point in our collective evolution.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’m pretty sure it was Dostoevsky who said, “Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart.” There is an evolutionary process happening on planet Earth right now and we’re all a part of it. Evolution is messy, it’s full of uncertainty and all kinds of curveballs. My life is no exception. Privilege does not exempt anyone from experiencing heart-ache, grief, sorrow, and despair.

If we want to co-create a more just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive society. We need to stop pretending and start imagining. I would invite you reading this to pause for a second and take a deep breath.

Inhale deeply and exhale slowly. Maybe take a minute to reflect on what it’s been like for you over the last few years.

Now shift your attention to your heart.

Breathe again.

Perhaps imagine what you hope for the world in seven generations time.

Keep breathing.

Now ask your heart one question: am I living in alignment with my greatest purpose?
Don’t worry, nobody will know the answer but you…

As you know, we’re big fans of Sustainable Self, Inc. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The mission behind Sustainable Self is to create greater harmony between human, natural, and technological systems by supporting leaders who want to spark complex change in their organization or business unit. Think of my work like Oracle from the Matrix, “a sapient program who is integral to the very nature of the Matrix itself.”

I am also piloting an experimental scalar energy technology that harmonizes the brain hemispheres, activates the parasympathetic nervous system, and detoxifies the body at a molecular level. It is a cutting edge tool for stress reduction and relaxation. Think of it like a spa treatment for your DNA.

You can find the Quantum Clinic by Sustainable Self in Frogtown just five minutes north of DTLA.

What makes you happy?
The historical development of physics and psychology, of course! Because when you realize you actually are the universe, learning about itself through your experiences, life becomes really fun.
