Life & Work with Joshua Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Lopez.

Hi Joshua, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey started around 2004-2005… had been a few years out of high school, really no guidance or any plans to do anything. Went to culinary, motorcycle mechanic classes. Then landed in a Pro Tools class at a community college in downtown San Diego. Then I had found out my neighbor had moved to AZ to go to a school for music and studio and live work. So pretty much looked into. I had money saved for school so pretty much used all that, grabbed a u haul, told my best friend Chris Dunn that he should look into it also which he did and decided to attend with me in 2006. Moved to AZ, Mesa for about a year. And was an amazing experience with schooling. Learning studio work, foley, scores, music production, music business to name a few subjects. Finished around 2007 February, moved back to SD, had looked in LA but was out my budget. So that dream had to wait. So from 2007-2015 ish, I had work in the AV industry in San Diego made a name for myself thru my hard work and good hospitality services. Such hotels as the Omni, Manchester Hyatt, Hilton Bayfront, Grand Del Mar, Park Hyatt Aviara to name a few properties, I ran doing audiovisual, all the same time making underground hip hop. Created an indie record label called Indigenous Culture Records, working with local artists, then artists thru out the US. Made a sound for myself, being that DJ Muggs, RZA, alchemist, DJ premiere all influences in my style of production. Till this day, I don’t make music but still have enough music to work with people. Dropped about eight albums solo and with artist.

Then I landed a job at the Hyatt La Jolla where I met Bobby J, the man the myth, I knew he was into music so I would always send him my beats, he was more pop rock, more pop than me who was grimy hip hop. He was in a band, toured, wrote music, great salesman personality lol. He ended moving to LA around 2015-2016. Stayed in contact their that time. And would still send beats. He kinda knew I wanted to be in the music industry. So not sure how but he asked if I would love to LA to do music, thought about and was like sure why not, single no kids let’s do this. Told him give me a year, then became six months, then two months then boomed sold all my stuff and was ready to go! But we had discussed that I should switch careers and look into doing video. Which at the time shook me as music is all I knew. Really thought about it, bring I was a big movie nerd I was down, I was always into video even at a young age making skate videos for the neighborhood kids. So sold all my audio gear and bought a camera. Moved to LA, slept on Bobby J couch the first year out here, after being on my own and living on my own for most of my life. Cane to LA had full-time work in SD and due to some lame situations and lane bosses, I had to file for unemployment. We would stay up longggg nights working in ideas for names and business ideas. When Bobby j came up with SZworldtourfilms. We decided to be partners 50/50.

As his career was in music, his main client was Kyle Massey from that’s so raven. He started a music career so Bobby J thought it would be smart to join forces with Kyle Massey to document his new journey as well. That relationship blossomed into an amazing friendship with him and his brother Chris Massey (Zoey 101) I have done all of Kyles IG videos and photos, music videos for Chris Massey, many videos for influencers, many red carpets. Many amazing experiences. These past four years have been amazing, the growth in our business and my video art has gotten better. Our client list is full of high-end celebs and influencers, we are working on a podcast and building new relationships everyday. I also started reselling Jordan’s and Yeezys. Started a company Zole Junkies, currently in the works, starting a clothing company (don’t wanna say name just yet, lol) also with my tattoo artist in San Diego Benny 3D Canales, who I also use to produce for musically. So definitely trying to stay busy. 2020 was very difficult but we stayed really busy filming with Kyle and other influencers over the pandemic.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not smooth, first year living on a couch unemployed, no family. No work, no clients, didn’t know anything about video since all I knew was audio, unemployed. Had to watch YouTube tutorials for days and nights sleepless. Whiteboard ideas and sleepless nights.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a videographer and also a photographer. I started a film company, SZWORLDTOURFILMS with my business partner about four years. Our main client is Kyle Massey from that’s so raven and Cory in the house, I do most of his influencer videos, filming and editing and photos for his Instagram. We also work closely with his brother Chris Massey from Zoey 101, with such projects like music videos, skits and live entertainment such as concerts or live performances. We have lucky to work with many influencers here in LA from Soulja Boy, Bad Bunny, The Rock, Dave Chappelle, Jennifer Lopez, Arod, Sia, Quavo, YG, Floyd Mayweather, Jaden Smith to name a few, and the list goes on. We are known for being upfront and close at many red carpet events, influencer gatherings, events, movie premieres and many more.

What separates us is probably our dedication to our craft, from my business partner being in the music industry as a music producer and songwriter, we have an inside look at the “celeb” lifestyle here in Hollywood. As well has to do with Kyle and Chris Massey being our main clients and leading the way with all the social events those social butterflies attend. Lol. We are also known for being creative and thinking outside the box when it comes to our video production. Super Proud also of what we have accomplished in a little amount of time, growth and creativity and client base. Also currently in the works for a podcast that will be streamed YouTube. Which I will be running and my business partner will be hosting with his Gf, called “In Bobbysworld” so be on the lookout for that. Big names in the music industry and influencers will be part of the roster for guests. I also proud to still be able to work thru all this mayhem we called 2020, our client list actually grew which we didn’t expect.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Biggest risk was moving here from San Diego, with just my clothes and car… literally sold all my stuff as I was living in a studio apartment a block away from sunny Ocean Beach. Having a full-time job as well in San Diego. I ended up working in La Jolla, CA with a gentleman by the name of Bobby J who actually was in a Band then later became a producer/songwriter. He would go back and forth to LA to do music, and at that time I produced underground hip hop locally in San Diego. He knew my passion was big for music-making. So long story short, he moved to LA around 2014. And later would ask me if I ever would move to LA to have a career in Hollywood, me being a creative I said why not. I told him give me a year, that became six months, then became three months. Next thing you know, I sold everything and moved to LA. Ended up sleeping on his couch for bout a year till I was able to get grounded with work and my start into my video career as before this move, I did audio never touched video besides some random stuff here and there in SD. Now flash forward four years to 2018 got a full-time work and then slowly started building a client base. So I would say my biggest risk was moving to another city literally at the drop of a dime. Luckily I had no gf or kids so I had nothing to hold me back. Except to follow my dreams which was always something in my mind but never thought it would happen, now I hang out with celebs on the daily and I get paid for it.
