Hi Cat, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved to LA about 13 years ago after graduating with a marketing degree and trying out law school for a semester. I decided that oversized blazers and red carpets were a better fit for me than pantsuits and case law. After moving here, I studied Product Development at FIDM while interning for Rock & Republic, the E! News wardrobe department and celebrity stylist Cher Coulter. My E! News internship turned into a few assisting gigs on that set, a part-time job and eventually a full-time position dressing several E! correspondents and anchor Terrence J. It was such an exciting time in my life because I was in my 20’s and experiencing all that LA had to offer while also growing as a stylist…getting to be in the thick of awards season has always been my favorite. After working at E! for about eight years, I decided to expand my career and move into freelance styling which I have been doing ever since. It’s been such a different path and has offered me so many different career opportunities where every project is different; working with musicians, editorials, red carpets and of course, still doing some television work.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think I was really lucky to find myself with a full-time stylist position so early in my career. When I started as an intern at E!, I instantly clicked with the people I was working with and my mentors very quickly became friends. I had a handful of amazing people – from talent to bosses to other stylists – in my corner. It all happened so naturally. Leaving that position to start my own business was definitely like starting over because I had to rebuild my roster from the ground up. The first year was rough as far as getting used to the changes in workflow but I had experienced that when I was assisting so I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I was prepared to appreciate the good weeks and learn from the disappointing weeks. Now, things are more consistent as I’ve developed relationships with new clients and other creatives that I collab with…. if we could just get out of this pandemic 🙂
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Cat Wright Style?
While styling is definitely my “full-time” gig, I’ve always loved writing. Before I had ever been published anywhere but my own blog, I would always ask outlets that brought me on to style if they needed anyone to write. I’d send them pitches and offer to write for free (harder to turn down, am I right?). Eventually, a publicist I was pulling clothes from introduced me to the editor at Racked LA who was looking for a writer. By then, I had published work to show her and she hired me as a contributor. I finally began to make money writing. I wrote there until they closed shop, covering everything from LA trends and designers to events and store openings. I also went on to contribute for the Huffington Post, Hello Giggles, E! Online and a site called Societe Perrier where I got to write about music for the first time.
