Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Hart.
Hi Jamie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey, thank you so much for the opportunity! I was born and raised in San Diego, CA. Music has been an instrumental part of my life since I began singing and performing at a young age. I was in several music programs that shaped me as a young musician such as the San Diego School of Rock and the vocal conservatory program at my performing arts high school, Canyon Crest Academy. As a developing musician, I performed as a singer and guitarist both for myself as a solo artist, as well as in multiple bands. During this time in high school, I performed at venues such as The House of Blues San Diego, The Hard Rock Cafe, and Lestat’s (a popular venue where artists like Jason Mraz performed early in his career.) At the age of 15, I also started to busk (street perform) on the streets of Ocean Beach. As music continued to be a large part of my life, I started to gain interest in other areas of the industry such as recorded and live audio. I took classes to learn programs such as ProTools and interned at Studio West, a local recording studio, where I had the opportunity to help run intern recording sessions for artists and bands. When it came time to pick what college I was going to attend I found out that Azusa Pacific University offered a Bachelor of Music in Commercial Music Business degree and I knew it would be a great fit!
During my time at APU, I made a lot of amazing connections in the industry and was lucky to land an internship at Adarga Entertainment Group, a label services and publishing admin company. The CEO at the time, Henry Alonzo, ultimately offered me a job to help create and develop their growing music publishing department! We worked with independent artists to ensure that their copyrights were protected and registered correctly with all of the music royalty collection agencies such as SoundExchange, BMI, ASCAP, SESAC, MusicReports, and YouTube. Throughout my time at Adarga, I also got to work with incredible artists developing their careers and even co-produced a live album recording at Madison Square Garden for the band Miel San Marcos that got nominated for a Latin Grammy! After graduating with my undergraduate degree in 2017, I continued to work for Adarga while doing part-time work with The Recording Academy in their awards department. The awards department is responsible for processing and organizing all of the submissions for the Grammy Awards and coordinate genre-specific meetings with industry professionals to review submissions! It was an amazing opportunity to witness and be a part of the process.
After I finished undergrad in 2017, I made the decision to enroll and be a part of the first cohort of a brand-new masters program in music entrepreneurship at Azusa Pacific University. I made the decision to get a master’s degree because music education is super important to me and it is one of my goals to one day be an adjunct professor teaching music industry studies!
I graduated with my masters in the Spring of 2019 and shortly after got a job at Adrev (a digital rights management company in the Downtown Music Holdings family of brands, focused on protecting and collecting copyrights online for independent artists, publishers and record labels) as a publishing manager, where I still work today!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been smooth at all. There were several moments during my undergraduate studies where my mom and I didn’t even know how we were going to pay for my tuition at a private university for the next year, but somehow, we were always able to find more financial aid, scholarships, or loans. I feel extremely blessed for those who helped support me and encouraged me to never give up when things got hard.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
In addition to my full-time job at Adrev, I work with independent artists providing services such as publishing administration, social media & content management, record release strategy, and general career planning (I outline these services on my website at https://www.jamiedeehart.com/
Something I am rather stoked about at the moment is working with artist Axel Mansoor as his social media and content manager. He is in the process of releasing singles to lead up to his debut EP! Amidst this, he became the icon of the Clubhouse App, so his face is smiling from the phone screens of more than 10 million users. Managing his social media and brainstorming what content he should be creating has been so fun and has pushed me a lot creatively.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Ooh definitely! Lucky for me, a lot of my first mentors in the music industry came into my life naturally whether as bosses or colleagues that I could look up to and learn from. My advice is that almost everyone wants to pass on the knowledge they have acquired to those who are younger and less experienced, so you just have to take the first step in asking them for help (perhaps in exchange for a coffee)! My advice in opening those relationships is to always make sure it’s genuine, and to focus on the inspiring things they’ve done that you’d like to learn more about, rather than what you’d like them to do for you.
