Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Lucero.
Jeremy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Lead up to the year 1992, I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. I was going to college part time, playing in a rock band, and in a job that didn’t have much of a future. An old friend of mine told me about his job as a portrait photographer and said that he’d bring me on board if I were interested. I had zero experience behind the lens, but he knew that I was into the arts and surrounded by a family of artists. I took his offer and after a short time I realized that I had a talent that I never knew existed. I continued with that portrait company for nine years and about two years into it I started pursuing event and lifestyle photography. This is where I discovered my love for photography. I realized that more than anything, I was a people photographer and I loved capturing people at different stages of their lives. Once 2002 rolled around, I started Lucero Photography, Inc. and the rest is history.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge that I’ve experienced as a photographer was transitioning from film to digital. When I first entered the world of photography, digital photography did not exist. My main camera was the Mamiya rb67 and believe it or not, I was photographing weddings with this beast of a camera. The final product was beautiful, but the camera was heavy a did a number to my back. Once the digital wave came, I jumped on a never looked back. It was a huge learning curve to go from film to digital, but it was and still is the future of progressive photography. I still love to see great imagery from film photographers, but there are some benefits to digital that film just doesn’t offer.
Lucero Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I do what I love and that’s what makes all the difference. People always ask me what I specialize in and I always say the same thing, I’m a people photographer. I love people and I love capturing them in their element. From newborns to the elderly, I enjoy photographing life.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is right here and right now. The fact that I’ve been able to do what I do every day for 25 years brings me a sense of pride and joy. I’ve seen so many photographers come and go over the years and many say that it’s too hard to make a living in this field. I say that it may be hard, but if you love what you do then do what you love.
