Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Katerina Captanis, DC, CCSP

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Katerina Captanis, DC, CCSP.

Hi Dr. Captanis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I knew from a very young age that I wanted to go into the healthcare field, but like most adolescents, I could not pinpoint what my calling would be and what I was most interested in. My parents were extreme athletes, so there was no question that my brother and I would compete at a high level and train more vigorously than most kids our age. I participated in several sports, but softball ultimately became my passion and my pathway for college. At the age of 16, I was invited to a prestigious travel ball try-out, and on day three of that try-out my body had enough. The coaches called my name, and it was my turn to be timed in sprints. It must have been four steps into my sprint when I felt both my quadriceps tear. For most, this was would be a career-ending injury, especially during one’s recruiting year for college.

Luckily, my ambitious chiropractor mom did not agree with what the medical professional had diagnosed as my fate, and instead she accepted the challenge to heal me and allow me to continue my athletic dreams of playing in college. She succeeded and not only did I have a successful collegiate softball career, but I also developed a passion for holistic health and sports medicine. From day one of college, I set out on my path to complete the prerequisites of chiropractic school and later tap into the sports medicine world. Today I work as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, and my passion only continues to grow.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most doctorate programs, chiropractic school tested my discipline and desire to succeed more than I had ever experienced. I have always had a passion for learning and did well in high school and college, but chiropractic school required a type of focus and determination only a person studying at that level of education can understand. Obtaining your doctorate is one thing, but being able to develop a successful business and network who support your passion is the true challenge. I truly believe the skills I developed on the softball field and working with a team where the common goal is to help each other succeed is what has molded the mindset I take into each and every day of work. I have been blessed to work with a lot of young student athletes, and I teach them how to apply balance, discipline and ambition to their everyday life. Throughout my career, I have been blessed to work with professional athletes, those in the entertainment industry, office workers, stay at home moms and children. At first, I found it difficult to individualize each person’s treatment, but when I realized my common goal is balance, mobility and allowing the spine to heal itself, I really found my calling.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I am a chiropractor who specializes in sports medicine. I have a family practice office location in Long Beach, CA where I see all types of patients a few days a week, but I am also a concierge chiropractor, where I work with patients from The Valley to West Hollywood in their homes or office spaces. I think that my treatment style and mindset separate me from most chiropractors. I apply the same expertise to someone who may experience pain caused by taking care of their three months old babies, to the NFL player needing to be 100% for his game. Once I become your chiropractor, I also become your friend, your life coach and accountability partner. I care so much for each and everyone of my patients, and it is my passion to make sure everyone is living their lives at their full potential.

If you asked a patient of mine what I am best known for, its probably my time management and straight to the point treatment style. I am proud of my ability to quickly diagnose an issue and immediately get to work on giving the body what it needs to heal. I love soft tissue work, including graston muscle work, cupping, active release technique and diversified chiropractic manipulative therapy. I had the opportunity to be involved in the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami and work with some of the most elite athletes of our time. I am so grateful for that opportunity and each day that I am able to fulfill my purpose.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love connecting people and having a wide array of specialties in my network to refer to. In 2020, I created a network of strong, empowered women who motivated and backed each other’s aspirations. Throughout this difficult year, we have been consistent in checking in with each other and providing a space place to discuss the ever-changing climate of business. This year more than any other time, I have valued the support and loyalty of my peers. I am the first in line to promote another woman entrepreneur, especially if their company revolves around health and wellness.
