Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Edmondson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Glendale, California and my family supported my artistic ventures while growing up. I was enrolled in violin lessons at an early age and soon became interested in the theatre. I studied theatre and liberal arts in undergrad which eventually led to my first professional acting gig in Chicago. From Chicago, I was recruited by Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University to study acting at a graduate level. After completing a six-month residency at Shakespeare’s Globe in London and presenting my graduate showcase in 2017, I moved to New York City. My old Chicago roommates joined me in the Big Apple and we went straight to work on creating our own film production company, Upset Bunny Productions (UPB).
In between off-off Broadway shows, small artistic projects, and continuing my graduate education in business, I worked to lay the foundations of UBP with the other co-founders. Eventually, we completed our first full-length feature film and were able to submit it to festivals. In 2019, I accepted a job with Warner Bros./Telepictures and moved to Los Angeles with my girlfriend, now fiancé, to work on the show EXTRA. Now working full time on a nationally syndicated television show, I am balancing that lifestyle with creating my own content as well as auditioning in my free time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but the journey has been incredible. Although I had unwavering emotional support from my family, monetarily they had just enough to get by. I made the choice at fifteen to get a job so that I could buy my own car and put myself through college. For about ten years, if I was not in school, I was working, often 30 plus hours on top of my classes. One of the most difficult challenges for me was balancing my passions as an artist and making money to pay rent. Time management and prioritizing were skills that I had to learn very quickly. New York City was the true test that helped shape me into who I am today. Constantly auditioning and having small victories while working soul-sucking jobs was as exciting as it was exhausting. Through pure determination coupled with the support of a great group of friends, I was able to help lead a team make a movie which opened doors to a job in Hollywood.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In August of 2019, I was hired to be an executive assistant on the show Extra. Show executives have warmly taken me under their wing and I am fortunate enough to further my experience in film production while working with some amazing pros of the industry. My primary responsibility is to take care of and help with anything the show executives may need which encompasses a large variety of tasks. Amongst these tasks, I help with bits of writing, field producing and have been known to make an appearance on the show here and there. Along with my job at Extra, I am working to build Upset Bunny Productions alongside the other co-founders. While the current pandemic has limited what we were able to accomplish in the 2020 festival circuit, our movie, “To Us,” was accepted into multiple festivals and received several nominations. We are currently using this time to brainstorm ideas and create new scripts. Doubling as actor and producer for “To Us” is the thing I am the proudest of. Those two weeks shooting on location for our project had to be the coolest thing I have ever done.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Enjoying the ride. I have found that when I am too focused on a goal and so determined to accomplish it, I can become very impatient. I get so focused on the future that I forget to fully experience the present. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that patience is incredibly important and that I must respect the journey; otherwise, life goes by too quickly and it is possible to miss out on some pretty amazing things.
