Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Curtis.
Hi Charlie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2011, I opened a CrossFit gym in the Arts District which was a still a very desolate part of downtown but full of community and personality. I ran and grew that business until May of 2020 when we were forced to close due to Covid. It was crushing after so many relationships and bonds we forged over health and fitness.
We transformed people’s lives and helped transform that neighborhood into a community driven pocket of downtown that was booming with new businesses and new residents. After seeing the impact and power that fitness had in building people up, I pivoted to a virtual platform and INDOORphins was born. We started with a couple of live classes each week, drawing off old gym members and friends that were left without a place to workout during the shutdowns and the community quickly took off. The goal was and still is to be inclusive and accessible to every regardless of what equipment you have or what your fitness history is. I have something for everyone. Fast forward to now: we run live classes everyday and build virtual fitness programs for people all over the world that are committed to their health and fitness every during this crazy time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been anything but smooth. The jarring transition from closing a nine years business to starting a brand new one was hard and trying but the one thing that remained strong and constant was the support from our community. Everyone understands that we are all in this together and we are all trying to get better with time and that support has created an incredible foundation for me to build and expand this new business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
INDOORphins is your all-in-one fitness stop. We offer live virtual classes daily where you can sweat it out at home with people from all over, we have an app that provides a variety of fitness programs depending on your goals, your access to equipment and your fitness level and we also offer virtual personal training (hopefully soon that will expand to in-person training at our rad new training space).
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
My goal is to reach as many people as possible and make daily fitness fun and accessible to everyone. Exercise is so crucial to our mental and physical wellbeing but I also know there is a stigma and perceived barrier to entry that prevents people from getting started. I want to get rid of all that and let people enjoy the process of getting better, stronger and healthier. I’d love to continue expanding our offerings and bring on specialty classes depending on what the community wants and needs.
