Meet Dylan Jackson Scott of Rad Horror in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Jackson Scott.

Dylan Jackson, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in NJ and started out playing in cover bands around 11-12 years old, which turned into bands that wrote all originals into my teen years. From there, I started to meet a bunch of different musicians from all around the area that would hang out in bars in NYC. I was clearly too young to go to these bars but I found myself there anyway. I worked and wrote songs with a ton of new friends that I had met. I had a little studio in my Mom’s basement in NJ while also flying back and forth to LA to write music for film and TV. I eventually met Halsey, we wrote and produced some songs together in that little basement studio… Her grandparents lived in the town next to where I grew up.

From there, we both got signed, she to Capitol and my band at the time to Interscope. I went on tour with everyone from the 1975 to Weezer for about four years straight. After I left the band, I decided to move to LA, continued working on film and TV music, wrote singles for alt bands like Dreamers and lovelytheband.

From there, it evolved into a new band called Rad Horror – which by accident turned into a clothing brand within itself. E-Commerce mostly but you can find our stuff at local LA shops such as New Profanity. I started a record company with some amazing seasoned partners who I consistently learn from, called Velvet Exit to give a platform to great artists who care deeply about their art and message. I also created an arm of a management company with my personal manager Don Robertson called MKultra. We developed this management company for producers and songwriters that we feel are under-represented.

I always like to stay busy because working on various projects because when I’m not being productive, I feel like I’m going fucking crazy…

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think it’s really ever a smooth road no matter what profession you’re in. I think life in general is hard and we just have to adapt to every moment.

For me, I find the biggest struggle to be waking up everyday and having to create something new or have a brand new idea for something… and it all has to come out of thin air. I challenge myself to do something new and creative every day.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a music producer/writer/musician and artist manager. My band is called Rad Horror.

I try not to get too proud of anything and rest on my laurels – I’m always focused on the future. As long as I’m having fun with Rad Horror that’s what makes it exciting to me. I grew up listening Punk Rock and Rock N’ Roll: There wasn’t supposed to be any rules. So with Rad Horror, I try my hardest to abstain from giving a fuck and whatever comes of it is the greatest gift I could ask for.

We try to be as honest as possible with the music we create and write what we live in our lyrics. I think that resonates with a lot of people.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’m not sure I would have done anything differently. Our experiences shape us, and everything that has happened – both good and bad – have helped shape us into what we are today.
