Meet Velma Sellars of Divine Label in Gary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Velma Sellars.

Velma, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been a lover of fashion and the creative arts. After surviving depression in 2016, I went deep into a spiritual journey to rediscover myself. I found love in myself and in the divine all over again. I wanted everyone to rediscover their true self, but I wanted them to be creative. So I birthed the Divine Label. A label that has custom messages and affirmations so that everyone can step into their divine self.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m not sure a smooth road exists. There are times when I am not creating, and fear wants to take over. Especially when things in my personal life are wild and crazy. I have learned that the downtime is the time for you to embrace the silence and listen. Every time I just come back stronger. Always remember what is meant for you is meant for you when it’s meant for you.

Divine Label – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Divine Label is an apparel and accessory brand meant to build confidence in self. Each piece is customized with a message that will affirm you along your journey. Our personal style is everyday wear, a spiritual/ancestral theme, and a clean minimal look. I am most proud that for every item sold 15% will go back into the community to fund events and opportunities.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The day I released my first line. I sold three designs of my Queen By Nature shirts. Just when I wanted to doubt myself, I sold out in a few days. It helped to solidify that this was indeed the path I was meant to be on.
