Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Blanchard.
Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.
My story starts in the newborn room of a hospital in Hayward, CA. My mother said you could hear me down the hall. A deep bellowing cry amid the other high pitched newborn shrieks. I sang in a group called the Sunshine Generation as little girl. And I started making stop motion animation videos with magnets on my parents refrigerator as soon as I could hold my dad’s camcorder.
I went to film school at SDSU. And as soon as I graduated, I packed up and moved to Los Angeles. I started out working at Jerry Bruckheimer Films & then settled at Warner Bros Pictures & Television, working for some incredible leaders. I practiced guitar in the back seat of my car during my lunch breaks. I would write songs and perform around town at night. I linked up with Planet LA records and got to perform & shoot at SxSW with them. They also gave me the great opportunity to perform at the Angel City Games multiple years now and also to perform in their latest rock opera. I did a little acting in the micro budget indie world. And I released a couple of singles with experimental music videos I directed.
I left my cushy studio job and started shooting music videos and digital commercials, VLOGs for artists, doing artist photography and taking any odd jobs I could get basically. I got a residency at the Viper Room.
I produced my 1st EP “On the Border of Chaos & Order” and directed a full video album. I’m currently releasing one song & music video the 1st Friday of every month, leading up to the album release, New Years Day, 2021.
Now I’m in the recording phase of the next album and doing revisions on a micro budget feature that I wrote.
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was a nut as a kid. 4 different high schools. Getting kicked out. Bad girl’s boarding school. Baptism in a river. Lived on an Indian Reservation. Struggles give you soul and build character. Music has been there for me during all my struggles. It’s a gift to be able to create songs from that.
Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
My music can be described as shoegaze & soulful grunge. I produce my own records with the help of talented musicians & friends. I play music live. I direct & cut music videos & short form content, behind the music & stop motion animation. My film company is called Rock Camera Roll.
I am fiercely independent with a DIY spirit.
When I’m not making music or films, I’m doing brows! I run an independent beauty business and I offer microblading, lip blushing, brow lamination, lash lifts, brow tinting and shaping.
How do you, personally, define success? What’s your criteria, the markers you’re looking out for, etc?
Success to me is a feeling I get when I’m being consistent and I’m expanding. The markers I’m looking for are people dancing and enjoying my music, being happy with a beauty procedure or enjoying a film. And having fun myself. Being kind to myself. And doing the things I want creatively.
