Meet Philicia Walker of Perfect Timing Fashion Boutique in Southwest LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philicia Walker.

Philicia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Perfect Timing Fashion Boutique was created back in 2012. As a licensed hairstylist, I recall my clients always saying “Perfect Timing” as they were either leaving or arriving to their appointments. My business began in my dining room with a bag of pre-owned clothes, and an upside-down piano rack turned clothing rack! I recall people saying “It doesn’t matter how you start, just start”.

After the pre-owned clothes sold out, I sought out a seamstress, where I began to design with the seamstress to present an option of custom pieces, which became overwhelming, as we saw our selves becoming the client’s personal tailor, and we weren’t really conveying our sense of style.

In 2015 I was laid off of my job, and I wrote down on my vision board all of my desires. Small, quaint location, with character, high foot traffic, and ample parking. The idea of a mobile truck which would encumber all of this popped in mind. We eventually ceased the custom pieces and began to make simple yet fun staple pieces, then we experienced a sad loss as my friend, my seamstress passed away in 2018.

Devastation fueled determination, and in 2019 we launched our mobile truck! Better known as the styling lounge, where we offer affordable stylish pieces, with the everyday but fun woman in mind. Services include styling tips, with mostly one off pieces, focusing on multifunctional fashion. Due to the nature of our business and because our clients physically are entering onto our truck, for safety reasons we don’t just pull up to unannounced locations. We only participate in scheduled events, such as Farmer’s markets, community events, on the job shopping, residential private shopping, girlfriends shopping parties, Rose Bowl, Jazz Feztivals, virtual shopping, and prior to the pandemic, we were a regular at LAX-IT,

Our styles are eclectic, chic, comfy, contemporary and casual, with a hint of edge that may be dressed up or down. Sizes are Sm-3X. In 2019, we partnered up with holychicaccessorybar whose accessories are on our truck to offer that chic, eclectic one off accessorized feminine feel.

Has it been a smooth road?
This has not been a smooth ride. Initially because we started in home we weren’t available to and for everyone. Also, a struggle that I faced at times is keeping our “Timeless sizes” in stock which is our plus size. The reason why I started with a seamstress was to have the opportunity to accommodate all sizes with quality and fashionable pieces. While I am still able to live up to that goal, at times the quality and looks are not what I would wear as a “Timeless size” woman myself. I have vowed to myself that I refuse to purchase something just for the sake to say that we have it. It has to speak to our brand, quality and style. For the most part, we have found some great quality Timeless size vendors, but I see this challenge in a lot of small clothing boutiques.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Perfect Timing Fashion Boutique story. Tell us more about the business.
When we originally started out, we specialized in our two-piece palazzo pants set better known as our Taylor Made. Since the passing of our seamstress, we haven’t been able to get back on that path however we haven’t given up. We currently specialize in custom Levi’s skirts and we are known for our one off pieces throughout our truck. Because of this, along with being a boutique on wheels, this sets us apart from others.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I do see some big shifts in the next 5-10 years, one being to transition to a larger truck, and we have other ideas written down that will be on trend, and we’re excited for them to come to fruition.
