Today we’d like to introduce you to Dale Hernsdorf.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dale. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began as a painter and photographer, then worked for some time as a graphic designer and illustrator. When I stumbled upon my first metalsmithing class however, I knew I had found my art form. To me, there is an essential spiritual dimension to jewelry, forged from the earth’s most important natural elements. My love and regard for the materials themselves is channeled into my work.
Has it been a smooth road?
What road in life is smooth? There are always bumps and detours. But for me, the joy of creating jewels that will outlive me, objects crafted from some of the most elementally beautiful gems and metals found on earth, creations that bring joy and satisfaction to others, makes any difficulties, any obstacles I encounter worth the effort to overcome. On the whole, I have been blessed. I am in business with my daughter, Annie, who is creative, passionate, and actively involved in changing the world for the better. I have a supportive family. I work with incredible people. And when I look around me, I find myself actively seeking to make changes that will help others who have not been so lucky. Vote!!!!
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your work?
I’m drawn to the sensuality of gold – the way it feels in the hand and on the skin – so there’s an abundance of it in my jewels. A huge consideration in my work is the intersection of luxury and wearability, with neither quality compromised for the other. My pieces feel decadent and special yet still comfortable, as fitting with jeans and a t-shirt as they are on a red carpet.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Los Angeles is one of the greatest cities in the world. It’s a mosaic of cultures and villages that offers everything from the familiar to the exotic. I love the diversity of the food scene. The weather. The fact that I often hear five or six different languages spoken whenever I walk my dog. LA is a casual city, but it’s also incredibly sophisticated. Aside from the traffic headaches that are almost a cliche, there’s very little I don’t like about this city.
