Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Eyears.
Lucy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started painting when I was in high school and then went on to receiving my BFA in painting when I went to university. I’ve always been very passionate about painting. Once I moved to Los Angeles after university, I worked various jobs and kept up painting. I always knew I wanted to pursue painting as my career, and thankfully I was able to once the pandemic began in March. I was let go from my job and was able to solely focus on painting which I had never been able to do since I moved to Los Angeles. Opportunities started to rise and I am currently working at an artist residency in China Town through the end of September.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Just like any career, nothing comes easy and you have to be patient. A struggle in particular has been the pandemic. Unfortunately, galleries, museums and artist residencies have all been postponed. The art world has definitely had a hard hit this year but I am hopeful for the future and good things will come in the long run.
Please tell us more about your art.
I am an artist who specializes in painting. My work is divided into two separate, yet harmonious categories. The first, a series of floral arrangement pieces using bold colors and large brushstrokes. Potted plants have been a direction that I have been drawn to even as a child. As I have progressed in my career, I find that I concentrate on their color initially, then tap into my own memories to create unique environments around them. The second category, my abstract work, reflects imagery I’ve pulled from the plants series, using leaves as inspiration, but allows more room for interpretation. I use both color and bold strokes as tools to create symbolic shapes, fluid lines and layers. This process allows room for me to escape into the work as I am creating, and in doing so, I hope the viewer experiences the same feeling.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My current residency at Pabst Blue Ribbon Studios has definitely been a highlight for this year! This is a collaboration residency with Shit Art Club and Monster Children. It’s a month-long residency and has been a fantastic experience.
