Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Harper.
Dave, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We started our little cafe four years ago and have steadily built it into a family. When we bought the business, we kept all the existing staff and asked them what we can do to help make life easier and better. Most of those staff are still with us and we’re a tight little family, we look after each other and our customers. We like to think of ourselves as humble, authentic and approachable but also committed to an excellent standard of which we are proud. Because Dave is an Aussie surfer, we always have boards lying around and he’s often pottering in the garden but Sabrina and Shirley are the bosses and make sure everything is perfect for our customers.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road but if you love what you do you’ll always find a way and be ok. We’ve had more issues than we care to think about. Our little family has made it worthwhile. Shirley, Lupita, Martin, if you’ve been to Blueys, you know them. They’re the lifeblood of our business and we’re truly grateful for them. COVID hasn’t been fun but we’ve worked hard to adapt the business and our community cares about us too!
Please tell us about Blueys Cafe.
We are a fun little surf cafe and market that serves a healthy, seasonal menu for breakfast lunch and dinner. We also have some old, less healthy favorites but life’s all about balance. Our espresso program is amazing and we’re really known for our authenticity, great value and amazing vibe. Also, loads of outdoor seating and room for dogs.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Countless days spent surfing and hanging out at Fairy Bower and Deadmans, two points breaks at my hometown of Manly in Sydney. As young grommets, we used to egg each other on to surf the bigger more dangerous waves in our area. Fairy Bower has a beautiful bay next to it with crystal clear water and loads of marine life.
