Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Judge and Dora De Larios.
Irving Place Studio’s roots in Los Angeles date back six decades. It was founded by clay artists Dora De Larios and Ellice Johnston in 1968.
Irving Place Studio today is a collaboration between Dora, her daughter Sabrina Judge, and son-in-law Aaron Glascock. Started in the summer of 2012, together they created a line of contemporary, elegant hand thrown ceramics for everyday use at the table. They have expanded their line to include decorative vessels and slab work. Every piece is handmade at their studio in Los Angeles.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Dora has been working in clay for 60 years. She is Irving Place Studio’s knowledge bank. Because of Dora’s lifetime of experience with clay and glaze materials starting the production line was easy. However, because clay and raw materials change we have had to adapt quickly to unforeseen material availability. It can be very challenging if a material becomes unavailable mid order. We are always testing and making changes accordingly.
Irving Place Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Irving Place Studio is a small family business that specializes in finely crafted small batch handmade ceramics. All of our dinnerware is worked on by hand 12 times using time tested techniques. We mix all of our glazes in house using Dora’s signature glaze formulas. We make everything at our studio in Los Angeles.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The thing that we are most proud of is that we make beautiful things by hand that people appreciate, love and enjoy. We bring beauty into the world.
