Today we’d like to introduce you to Matrix Quevedo.
Matrix, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started off recording videos and taking pictures on my iPhone cause I needed better quality images. I’m a motivational speaker and incorporate that into my sessions when it comes to taking pictures. so with that being said, I needed to up; even my social presence. I quickly realized iPhone pictures aren’t going to cut it. So I bought a professional level camera and begun my journey.
Having zero previous experience with photography, I learn from YouTube university. I then moved from New York to Venice, California to chase after my dream of becoming a speaker and coach, arriving here and networking with those in the industry people started asking me if I could help them capture images and videos. The opportunity was too overwhelming for me not to do it. So I started taking pictures and videos for my friends and noticed I could coach and motivate them right then and there. I gained a love and appreciation for bring out the subject best qualities and helping them overcome their insecurities even if it was just for our session.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road hasn’t always been smooth I had opportunities to shoot some amazing people. Social media influencers and celebrities but I’ve also come up short in doing so. Doing this for almost four years now, I had a chance to shoot top tier speakers in the industry and I couldn’t get my settings right. It was a spur of the moment type thing and I missed my shot. The pictures came out too dark, too blurry, too bright, etc. I felt like quitting, I felt I wasn’t good enough. Honestly, I felt dumb and like a fluke, but I kept pushing and honed my skills. Now I’ve worked with a world boxing champ, social media thought leader who has over 100 followers and even a movie producer who shots were used for her interview with LA Voyager Magazine. The hardest struggle for me was fighting the thoughts of doubt in my mind about being legit. I discovered my craft in an unconventional way and has thoughts about being a fraud.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the 50MM Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a motivational speaker and life coach who expresses his genius through capturing people’s truest selves through my lens. I take dope pictures and help people put their best foot forward on social media. I specialize in lifestyle images used to promote brand courses and events. I’m known for making people feel comfortable in front of the camera and leaving with a newfound love and respect for themselves. I’m most proud of myself for stepping out on an edge and going for it. No one in my family has a business, let alone a growing and thriving one. The biggest factor that sets me apart from others is the fact that I incorporate different motivational modalities into my shoots. It’s like a self-help course and a photoshoot all in one.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I honestly see my industry staying consistent in the next 5-10 years. As social media grows more and more people brand and companies will need people who are able to create stories with a camera so the big shift is that everyday people will be able to capture better images but pros will still set the standards.
