Today we’d like to introduce you to Wild the Coyote.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve wanted to be a musician my entire life. Any memory that’s not related to that goal is hard to even remember. I grew up in Templeton, California. It’s a small town with more cows than people, and that’s where the inspiration for my country sound stems from. In the summer of 2006 I packed up and moved to LA. I dove right into the music scene here, hung out at locals shows, got a bartending job and started a rock band (Gunpowder Secrets) that actually gained some momentum but never fully took off. The big blessing was that I tended bar at two venues on the Sunset Strip, the Viper Room and House of Blues, they were the coolest jobs and I really got a taste and hunger for live shows from the years I spent working there. Coincidentally, I ended up selling out those stages with Wild the Coyote later down the line. So after a decade of local gigs and side hustles, I started really investing in WTC and started collaborating with hip hop artist, and now best friend, Badd Wolf. We were quickly approached by Yelawolf, who invited us to play a few shows with him including his music festival “Slumfest” out in Nashville. That was a pivotal point and after that things really picked up speed. Badd Wolf and I starting playing more and more shows, flying and driving ourselves all over the country leading us right up to opening for Yelawolf on his North American tour at the end of 2019. We also had 3 Wild the Coyote and Badd Wolf songs placed in “Yellowstone” a new TV show on the Paramount Pictures Network. Today, in midst of this global pandemic, I’m releasing and writing more music than ever, from my solo music to collaborations with producers and artists. I’m dedicated to my craft, my music, my fans. This is just the beginning of for me.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s definitely been a bumpy road. So much life has happened from the beginning of my story as Wild the Coyote to where I’m at now. Whereas today I’m grateful to be able to work and focus solely on the music, there were major challenges before that, mostly stemming from needing side jobs to pay the bills and just life in general. That always keeps you halfway in and halfway out. In 2014, my dad was diagnosed with cancer and for the first time since I had moved out to LA, I had to go home. For the next few years, while he battled his diagnosis, I lived weekdays back home running my dad’s business, and weekends in LA working on Wild the Coyote. In the last year since my dad passed away, it’s been really healing for me to hear and perform songs that I wrote for him and that are inspired from that period of my life. So I have a very real sense of how some of my struggles have become a part of me and a part of my music in a very powerful way.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Id like to say I bring out a dark side in country music. I’ve been able to develop this sound that is different than anything I’ve ever heard because it reflects a vision that is so specific inside my head, something between a daydream and nightmare. I call myself a storyteller; my goal is always to tell a story that will take the listener to this other world I’ve imagined in the most vivid way that I can. Besides the vision behind the music, it also guides every aspect of my project–my sets at live shows, merch that I design, social media etc… it all reflects this style and sound that I’m creating.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
After the lockdown happened in the beginning of 2020, I was able to use that time off the road to launch my new website and online store. It’s a one-stop-shop where people can get everything in one place, from my music and videos to the merchandise, updates and art. I’ll be releasing a handful of singles followed by my third solo EP by the end of this year. I’m patiently waiting until we can tour again, and until then I will continue to put music out anyway that I can and start rocking out some live-stream concerts.
