Meet Becca Mader of Bexie in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Mader.

Becca, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was a little girl, I always loved getting done up with a new hair due or makeup look. You could always find me cutting my Barbie dolls hair, or drawing on their lipstick with a sharpie. When I was 13 years old, I got a camera for Christmas and started up my YouTube Channel. There I posted makeup and hair tutorials expressing the love I had for the beauty Industry. When I was a junior in high school, it became time to decide where I wanted to apply to college. As 17 years old, I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career like many of my fellow peers. At the time, I was working a part-time job at a small salon in my town of Wakefield, MA where I worked as the receptionist and assistant to the stylists. College decision day was coming up and I decided to take a leap and not follow the so-called “norm” of going to a four years school. I knew going to school for cosmetology was my calling except I wanted to go all out and move across the country to learn from the best.

At 18 years old, after graduating Wakefield Memorial High School, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dreams of getting my cosmetology license and one day hopefully starting my own business. I attended Aveda Institute of Los Angeles where I attended school for 13 months completing my 1600 hours. Once passing my state board test and receiving my license, I was on the hunt for a job. I didn’t want to follow the route most people take which is working in a salon assisting or working the front desk. I wanted to freelance and make a name for myself on my own. I like a challenge, I like being my own boss. Since being in the working force, I have done hair for Olga Safari, Rapta, JakeTheShooter, and Team 10 Members. I have also worked alongside renowned stylist J Ladner assisting him during one of his master classes while on tour with Larissa Love.

Over the past eight months, I was also working on building my own company. I wanted to create a platform for people (predominantly women) to have access to high-quality hair accessories with an understanding of the products they use. On June 15th, 2020 I launched Bexie selling Satin Hair Scrunchies that are safe for your hair causing no crease or breakage, as well as fashion hair clips. Bexie has multiple colors and styles for everyone’s liking. Bexie is a platform to encourage everyone to wear their best hair, express themselves with a little accessories, and to become more aware of what you’re putting into your hair. If you told me a few years ago, at 20 years old I’d be a business owner and a freelance hairstylist living in Los Angeles, I would have never believed you. If I never took that initial leap of faith, I’d never be where I am today. I still have much more to learn and many more people to connect with, but I am extremely excited for what’s to come.

Has it been a smooth road?
Moving to Los Angeles on my own right out of high school, definitely wasn’t easy. Leaving my friends and family was tough, but I knew it was what I had to do to learn the most about the beauty industry. Cosmetology School consisted of many long hours. It was tiring and tedious but extremely worth it. Along the way, I experienced things that most kids out of high school should never witness. I had my purse and all my belongings stolen while in school, and I walked in on my roommate I just met over Instagram overdosed on our bedroom floor. Experiencing these things at 18 years old was a lot to handle, let alone being across the country from my family. I would have to say these experiences shaped me into who I am today and has definitely made me grow up a few years quicker than the average kid at 18.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As a hairstylist, I mostly specialize in color and styling. My schedule is on a freelance basis so I am booked whenever someone needs me on a set, a shoot, or needs their day to day hair done. I also am the owner of hair accessory and beauty platform Bexie. We promote a healthy hair lifestyle by selling Satin Hair Scrunchies that are safe for your hair causing no crease or breakage, as well as fashion hair clips. Bexie has multiple colors, styles, and positive messages for everyone’s liking. Bexie is a platform to encourage everyone to wear their best hair, express themselves with a little accessories, and to become more aware of what you’re putting into your hair. Being determined, personable, and hard-working sets me apart from others. Any job I am booked for, or any content I create, I make sure to always put my best foot forward, and go above and beyond, to give my clients or viewers more what they are scheduled to receive.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Los Angeles because there is so much opportunity. There is really nothing to dislike about it because anything is possible in the city of Angels.
