Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia Marin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Claudia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always known that I was going to be an artist since a very young age, most of my childhood and adolescence has consisted of me filling up sketchbook after sketchbook with drawings and paintings and visiting fine art museums in America and Europe. I currently am entering my senior year at the Rhode Island School of Design, while my major and primary artistic background is in figure drawing and figurative oil painting, the medium that has fit me the best is the art of film photography. I realized that it was not painting that I wanted to do, but rather work cooperatively with others in order to construct otherworldly images with a camera. My investigation into film and the art of filmmaking is what inspires my drive to become a film photographer, especially when having seen the films, Down by Law by Jim Jarmusch and the Garden by Derek Jarman.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think every artist’s journey is internally a difficult one, there are many struggles one has to overcome with oneself when figuring out how to articulate where one’s work stands for themselves and others. Over the course of the past three years. I think my biggest obstacle was giving up the idea that I needed to paint in order to be an artist, I realized that being a creative is about marking art that you can pour your heart into in the most enjoyable way possible. I can say that because of my explorations in shooting film photography and 16mm short films, my eyes have been opened to a world of infinite possibilities.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As a Visual Artist, I specialize my work in creating worlds of dreams and fantasy by conducting various streams of inspiration and imagery that I collect in my research. I work collaboratively on film projects that I direct and shoot on 16mm films and 35 mm photographs. I really enjoy working in both black & white and color; however, the worlds that are made from both visual mediums are completely different for me. When working in black & white, I try to conduct the most surreal images possible, I construct dreamworlds. As for color, its more about constructing a fantasy, which in my view, is something more attainable and believable. In my future works, I do plan on working on merging the two a lot more.
Another facet to my work that I find extremely important is intersectionality, it is the year of 2020 and it is my strong belief that every creator who works with figurative representation should ultimately represent all of bodies, faces, sexualities, and races in their work.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I do plan to transition into doing medium format and digital photography once I can become more established as a photographer in Los Angeles, really my goal is to be featured in magazines, work with fashion, and contribute to the fine art world and work with galleries in selling my work. While I know this is a journey that’s only started, it’s really a goal of mine to achieve. As for where I want my photography to go artistically, I am going to start doing more group orientated photo projects and outdoor shoots.
