Meet Sean Howard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Howard.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sean. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
For as far back as I can remember I have always had a camera close by. Photography has literally been the lens through which I have viewed my life – immortalizing my life’s most meaningful moments in pictures. Over the year’s photography has helped me to confront some very harsh realities about myself and the world around me, all while simultaneously serving as a sort of escapism.

It wasn’t until my sophomore year at a community college that I got the inkling that photography could transition from a hobby to being a viable source of income. I was a broke college kid creating reportage photos for the school newspaper and making portraits of the aspiring models nearby, when the word got out that I was “nice with the camera”. My peers discovered that I could make a decent photograph and began inquiring for my rates. I quickly took those inquiries as a sign from the divine and reasoned that if people were willing to pay me to photograph them then it would be in everyone’s best interest if I got serious about learning how to actually make a quality photograph. That’s where my journey began and it is still the long, winding, and some days uncertain road that I am still on today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It is never my intention to romanticize this ongoing journey as a photographer, because the journey isn’t always necessarily picturesque. There are times when I receive incredible opportunities and things are progressing quickly, then there are other days that feel quite slow and dismal.

What’s been the most important for me on this journey has been learning the importance of prioritizing my mental health, which has been inextricably tied to my drive and vigor along the way. I also think it is so important to remind ourselves to take breaks and to retreat from the need to receive external validation and remember why we fell in love with our passions to begin with.

Sean Howard Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a photographer specializing in portrait and documentary photography. I am most proud of my ability to consistently deliver a quality product – a photograph that communicates an individual or company’s story in a compelling way. My passion is what sets me apart from most. I put my heart into my work and will work tirelessly until the job is done.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I believe everything happens how it’s supposed to, however, if I could start over I would probably have started assisting photographers who’s work I admire from the very beginning,
