Meet Colette Cosentino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colette Cosentino.

Colette, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a toddler, I was compelled to create on the kitchen walls, a foretelling of my future career as an artist who is most comfortable at a larger scale. My medium then was Crayola. My mother simply gave up steering me away from my scribbles and so around the room at 3 ft high was my first mural. It has not been a delightfully easy road, but it is one I am compelled to be on, and it is most fulfilling.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have had many jobs to support my art habit. I think more than anything, had I really had a head for business, I could have been further along. But you just keep going, and keep giving it your all.

Please tell us about your work.
My work has been described as calming, ethereal even. I am a decorative artist, so many of my larger works are my take on traditional themes. Spontaneous patterns, minimal color, chemistry, dots, all play an important role. I am known for my large abstract-esque seascapes and large backdrop style paintings, as well as for painting hand painted wall coverings.

I am most proud that I have this wonderful art studio and gallery space in downtown Santa Barbara. It is most every artist dream to have a studio like this and I am very grateful for it. It was a long road to get here.

My work is set apart in its way because of my signature style. I am really excited that I have a line of wall coverings launching late this year with a wonderful company that has been in business for over 100 years. I also have a small line of new products designed with my artwork that will be launching within the next few months.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I plan to be entirely open to the changes in the art world over time. As a self-employed artist, I have multiple arms of income, from small paintings and prints that I sell online, to hand painted wall coverings commissioned by designers, to larger works that are commissioned by homeowners. A person needs to always be ready to reinvent yourself and change with the times, whatever that means.
