Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Groves.
Scott, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story is similar to many in the Mortgage world. From 2000 to 2008, I worked at a well-known bank. Seeing the writing on the wall, I left a mere ten months before the bank failed; but the damage had already been done. So from 2008 to 2010, I was broke.
By 2013, I was in the top 1% of loan originators, a title I have maintained every year since. I am sure you’re asking how this turn around happened.
It was a trip to Belize, for a friend’s wedding, that turned out to be full of good fortune – the birthplace of some lifelong friendships, and the beginning of some very important mentorships. During this trip, one of the attendees, Kirk Gerou, spoke with me about why an “in-house” loan officer position with a real estate company might make sense.
I applied for the job and started about a month later. I had a small guaranteed draw and about 60 days to start making money. I was ill-equipped to make the change from refinances and second mortgages to FHA and other loan options, but I knew I could learn quickly and work hard.
I learned from experienced Realtors about the value of lead generation, prospecting, and staying top of mind with referral sources and clients. For two straight years, I worked harder than anyone I knew. Lead generation helped me redefine my life and definitely saved my career.
It is now 2020, with good coaching, the right company, and hard work I am (almost) debt-free, happily remarried a father of three, an author, and owner of a coaching business where I coach fellow loan officers. Most of this success has come from hard work, a commitment to do the daily lead-generation activities that generate referral relationships and focus on business success.
Myself and my coaching members know, “the only ‘shortcut’ to success is guidance from those who have done what we want to do.”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being in the Mortgage world, I was hit hard with the 2008 recession. My entire 401K was largely invested in WaMU stock, which was entirely gone. I cashed out right before the stock slid to $10 a share. I was suddenly an unemployed, non-college graduate, with a one-company resume and desperately trying to find a job.
During this crisis, I married and divorced, gained weight, and took up poker to earn some spending cash (although I didn’t always lose, it was not a good source of revenue that I could actually count on). I thought about bartending, dealing poker, underwater welding – anything to avoid dealing with a job in the financial markets again.
I had resigned myself to some middle-management job at IKEA and declaring bankruptcy; I was close to $1 million dollars in debt.
Please tell us about Consolidated Coaching.
The coaching company I own, Consolidated Coaching, is a coaching program for loan officers who want to double their income. After spending over $100,000 on events and coaches of my own, I have consolidated (get it, like the name?) that knowledge into easy to digest lessons to make sure my members can survive the hard times and thrive during the good times.
The Consolidated Coaching program lets you take control of your business and your life, five steps will make sure that this is your best year ever. Whether if you’re a brand new Loan Officer who is looking to create good habits from the onset or a more seasoned LO, looking to carve out your niche, our coaching program will help you predictably scale your business and experience more freedom.
There are plenty of coaches out there, but how many of them are current top producing loan officers? That is what sets Consolidated Coaching apart! We have a proven track record of success and are working through the same daily difficulties as our members.
