Today we’d like to introduce you to Geraldine Guzman.
Geraldine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Pomona, CA grew up in a household where music was a must right after “frijoles con queso” (beans and cheese.) in the city of Pico Rivera. I am the daughter of two Mexican immigrants and the oldest of two girls. Whom were raised to be independent, fearless, and empowering women. All while music played in the form of an 8-track or radio in the background. I knew early on, I would want to make a living out of something in the music/entertainment world. As the years went by, I learned that I had a singing talent, which led me to join a mariachi group. In this group, I would also learn my skills as a leader and that I was an entertainer oddly. I was fortunate to travel with this group and polish all my new skills as an entertainer.
After I graduated from El Rancho high school, I set off to study at Rio Hondo college where I would study journalism and mass communications. Finding my way and voice through college I would participate as a writer in the college newspaper. Most of the time the pieces I wrote were new music critiques unconsciously. Time went by and I set out to do more work and learn radio in the Academy of Radio and Broadcasting. While at the academy, my radio show was featured on campus and I would learn that my true passion was radio. Because it brought back all my childhood memories, cleaning alongside my mother, working with my father, or teaching my little sister who Los Tigres Del Norte, Madonna, Ice Cube were and are.
It was in 2015, where I am assigned a project to interview someone who works in my dream field job. Back then, I had sent out several emails to different stations, but only one morning show host answered and gave me the chance to fulfill my project. That station being Mega963FM. On that same day of the interview, I obtain a job offer at the station. Slowly but surely I would move on up starting as a once a week board operator, creative content producer for the afternoon drive, assistant program director, and now afternoon drive host. All in the station that I would listen to while going to college, MEGA963fm.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Every dream or goal comes with its ups and downs. Mine are no different. I wouldn’t say they’re struggles, more of learning experiences. Whether it’s job-related, peers, colleagues, and or family. My biggest struggle would be sacrificing my family. By that, I mean missing out on birthdays, mother’s days, father’s day or simply sitting down to have dinner as a family. For me, that would be my only struggle because I am such a “home body.”
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am currently the afternoon host 3pm-7pm Monday through Saturday for Los Angeles’ #1 Party Station Mega963fm. Playing all the latest reggaetons hottest hits from J.Balvin to Tego Calderon. I get the chance to entertain and inform Los Angeles alongside it’s surrounding areas. My solemn purpose while being on radio is to be of service to our loyal listeners. Proving local information, inspiring stories, witty silly remarks, and a healthy beauty tip or two. What makes me feel the proudest is that I am an example that “anything is possible, as long as you try.” That no matter how many negative comments you receive, that your purpose and passion is bigger than anything. What sets me apart from others is that I am literally “tu amiga geegee” (your friend geegee) I enjoy talking to our listeners, getting to know them being there for them with them.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I truly believe we make our own luck. Working, studying, practicing hard. While keeping a positive and gracious mind. Sure along the way, we might have bad days, but it’s all part of the experience. It’s up to us, how we go about what life throws our way.
