Today we’d like to introduce you to Teddy Coffey.
Teddy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised just outside Rochester, NY in a town called Webster. Growing up in Webster was a blast, I had (and still have) the most loving family with the best support system there is. I have never once felt any hesitation or doubts from either of my parents with my dance career and dream following. Prior to my falling in love with dance classes or ever attending one, for as long as I can remember, I would dance and sing around my house constantly. If you dig through old VHS tapes there’s a bunch of footage of four and five years old Teddy dancing and performing his heart out. I used to dream and envision myself on a stage in front of thousands. I began actually training in dance at the age of eight. My mom called my Aunt Cindy up and told her that she thinks I would really enjoy some dance classes. My Aunt Cindy was a dance teacher and she sort of took me under her wing and helped shape me into the dancer and performer I am today. I was very lucky to have my Aunt Cindy as a role model, she was and still is the hottest commodity in town. Tap and hip hop were my two biggest passions from age eight until the age of eighteen or nineteen before moving to Los Angeles, CA. I moved to LA after appearing as a contestant on season eleven of FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” followed by touring the U.S. and Canada with the show as well. The show, in a sense paved the way for me to begin my professional career as a dancer. As a child, I never took the saying “follow your dreams” lightly and still to this day, I’m doing that very same thing with new goals and dreams to achieve.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never a completely smooth ride getting to where you envision yourself. Following your dreams comes with many sacrifices and a lot of hard work. When I was in school as a kid and a teenager I spent pretty much all of my free time at the dance studio with my Aunt Cindy. I missed out on a lot of school events and happenings while rehearsing and training for competitions and recitals coming up each year. There are so many highs and lows as well when you are in the entertainment industry. I have been very humbled and grateful to have had many achievements and highs since moving to LA, but I also have experienced some dry spells where I’m not sure when the next time I’ll be paid is. My thick skin and my drive, however, prevent me from ever giving up. I may be discouraged at times but it’s always worth it in the end. My family back home is also a call away and they always open my eyes and remind me of why I do what I do. I get homesick and I don’t like living so far away from my loved ones, but in order to do what I love, I most definitely have to live in LA.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
The last five years in LA have been a blessing. I’m very proud of what I have accomplished and experienced so far. Some of the highlights include: dancing for The Backstreet Boys in their Las Vegas residency “Larger Than Life” and getting to travel with them as well, touring with “Dancing with Stars’” Maks, Valentin and Peta Chmerkovskiy on their own tour titled “Confidential,” performing with Florida Georgia Line on their “Smooth Tour” in baseball stadiums like Fenway Park, prior to “Confidential” I was a part of Maks and Val’s “Our Way” U.S. tour, The Voice, American Music Awards, America’s Got Talent, Little Big Shots, Pearl the show, and many more. I am currently a part of Christina Aguilera’s Las Vegas residency titled “The Xperience” as well as traveling internationally on her tour titled “The X Tour.” What’s special about my career so far is I have been lucky enough to achieve my two biggest childhood dreams.
Since I was four years old, I wanted to dance for Christina Aguilera, and since eight or nine years old, I decided I wanted to be on “So You Think You Can Dance.” Not a day went by growing up where I didn’t envision myself accomplishing these two things. I truly and wholeheartedly believe in manifestation. I would pray that all my hard work would lead me in the right directions. What does this mean for me though? This means that I have had to make room for new goals and dreams. I recently began recording my own original music that I wrote and sang. I released an EP titled “2am” with five songs on it all produced by Jonah McLean and mixed by Shachar Boussani. You can stream the EP on all streaming platforms and purchase it on iTunes, this too has been a dream of mine. I’m broadening my horizons and reaching for the stars once again and I hope to be a songwriter one day for a major artist. I love any and all art forms and want to continue to push boundaries and create!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The people who have believed in me and supported me through the years are the ones I will forever cherish. My entire family roots for me and they try and make it to every touring show I am in! In no particular order shout to: Mom, Dad, Rob, Ben, Benny, Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Cindy, Uncle Greg, Aunt Debbie, Aunt Carol, Courtney, Uncle Ron, Aunt Lynette, Anthony, Niki and sooo many more! I’m surrounded by an immense amount of love! I would not be where I am today if I didn’t have these people in my life.
