Meet Rick Perez of GTR Studios in Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Perez.

Rick, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been taking pictures since I was 15 years old, documenting the adventures of my friends and I through a disposable camera. As I grew older my disposable turned into a digital and my eye developed even more by being able to take countless photos.

I went to college at CSU Monterey Bay and continued the documentation of my friends. I studied Psychology but all I wanted to do was to hang out with my friends and take pictures. After graduation, this desire took me to New York City.

New York City was where I discovered my identity as an artist and individual. Taking me out of my comfort zone, the city and its inhabitants inspired me to constantly channel my creative flow. With my focus being underground parties and rock n roll lifestyle, I began to be known as ‘Good Time Rick’ and gained notoriety in the Brooklyn nightlife scene. After six years, New York City’s long winters and never ending party life became too much for this California boy.

I am now in the great city of Los Angeles, California and loving every moment. I am continuing to document music and nightlife but also families and small companies and fashion brands. I look forward to see how LA drives me to become a better artist and photographer.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have always struggled with being focused. Throughout my life, I wanted to focus on having fun instead of being a professional; I am now at the point where my career is my number one priority.

Another struggle is comparing my path with other photographers: why am I not at that level? Why can’t I take photos like that? I have to keep reminding myself that everyone’s paths are different and there is room for success for everyone.

GTR Studios – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
GTR Studios is a photography business that focuses on people’s lives. I want to document everyone from all walks of life: whether it’s a musician crowd surfing at venue or a child’s first birthday party, I want to be there.

With so many talented photographers in the industry, what sets me apart is the actual experience of working with me. My positive personality and genuine interest in the human experience allows me to get along with most everyone. I try to meet people where they are, understand them, and bring out their best selves. I’m really good at keeping energy throughout the shoot and give direction when it’s needed.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My view of success has always been being able to positively impact the lives of people around me. I want to make people feel loved, confident, and inspired. If someone picks up a camera because of me or has a better outlook on life because of something I’ve said, then my work is done.
