Meet Drenaka “Dree’ Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drenaka “Dree” Williams.

Drenaka, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I love capturing priceless moments of my friends and family on any given day. Photography has always been a passion of mine. I view it as beautiful art being told through the lens of a camera. After working years as a behavioral therapist for children with disabilities, I realized it was time to step out on faith to follow my dreams of becoming a photographer. Many ask did I go to school for photography? The answer is no, I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. I believe you can go after whatever it is your heart desires which is why I started feeding my soul in every passion I’m gifted in. Being the autodidact that I am, I would stay up countless nights until I was confident enough to proceed with building my business. There were times when I wanted to give up, however the strength and drive in me knew I had to keep pushing forward. I am truly blessed to be able to share my gift of photography with so many wonderful people.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life comes with challenges when trying to balance work, parenthood and building a business. I faced many challenges throughout my time in building my brand. I’m a mother first. During the time my son played travel basketball and completing my last year in college forced me to make a decision with having to cancel photoshoots, workshops and networking events. I had to be honest with self and my clients in putting my business on hold because I was not able to commit 100%. I felt defeated but in the end everything I sacrificed for was well worth it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dree Williams Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a lifestyle photographer who specializes in family, maternity, newborn, engagement, headshots and portraits. My creative process is natural, effortless, organic, simple and fun-completely curated from my connection with my clients.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The role of luck is unpredictable and a person’s success is always unmeasurable. I have always been a hardworking woman since the time I begin working at the age of 15. I had setbacks throughout my journey but I continue to stay positive in knowing without going through challenges in life I would not be the woman I am today. Today I am celebrating 13 years of being a photographer. I am beyond blessed as I continue to improve myself and surroundings in my life and business.
