Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalia Malova.
Natalia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was a top makeup artist in Moscow, working regularly with celebrities and for covers and fashion stories in fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, InStyle, Elle, GQ, Glamour and many others. But I was dreaming to live in Los Angeles, my favorite place on earth. I was thinking about LA several years but it was kind of scary to move as I didn’t know anyone here and I couldn’t imagine how to start over my career and all my life. But I decided to go to LA for couple of months and try to sign with the agency representing artists, otherwise I wouldn’t have moved there, I had a lot to lose. The main thought I had that it’s never late to came back if something went wrong. So emailed several agencies sending them my portfolio and I’ve signed the contract with the first agency I came. It was one the happiest day of my life because signing the contract meant I could move to my dream place. Step by step I starting to work with locals, meeting a lot of interesting and creative people, finding a great friends and exploring new city and new chapter in my life. I moved to LA 4 years ago, since then I’ve changed the agency, now I am representing by Exclusive Artists Management, one of the best on the market, working with celebrities and just enjoying my life in my favorite city.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most difficult part was to start over my career from the very beginning after being famous and one of the most in-demand make up artist in Russia. I was working with the Hollywood stars as well as for editorial for the best high fashion magazines, shooting the covers with famous photographers and top models like Bella Hadid, Natalia Vodyanova, Petra Nemkova, Daria Strokous to name a few. But nobody knew me here. And I knew how long does it take and how much efforts it takes to make a career again. That’s was a main question if I was ready to start again from the very beginning. The only thought that kept me going was “it’s never too late to return home”. It’s not easy and takes time to meet people from the industry, build relationships, get a chance and opportunity to work on interesting projects. A vast competition, so many great makeup artists from around the world, but that’s more exciting and interesting.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am working a lot with celebrities now, doing a makeup for red carpets and events. I was working with Tilda Swinton, Gerard Butler, Leona Lewis, Arianna Huffington, Diane Von Furstenberg, Devon Aoki, Karlie Kloss, Dasha Zhukova and many others. I am working with models and photographers, sportsmen, actors and artists, designers and politicians, musicians and singers. This is the most exciting part of my work, you have a chance to meet and talk with the most interesting and talented people who create a history. I am also working for editorial, commercial and advertising campaigns. Love to work for music videos. I was working on music videos for Teyana Taylor, Steve Aoki, Niia, DJ Cassidy and many others.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This is a great city for makeup artists, as there are so many events and awards, tv, music videos, photo and video shoots, adv campaigns, movies, celebrities, you can find everything here. Maybe except fashion, bit all the rest you can find here for sure. And so many creative and talented new people coming all the time from around the world, so you can collaborate and grow up together.
