Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Levin.
Ashley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been singing and dancing since I was three years old, and I moved to Los Angeles from Miami, Florida, after spending two years in Nashville for my music career. I’ve had my sights set on honing a singular voice ever since moving to LA. I was on NBC’s The Voice Season 12 and while an incredible experience, it also taught me how I do and don’t want to be portrayed as an artist, a person, and musicians. Since I’ve always been in choir, musicals, bands, funk groups, playing gigs in every genre, and writing in every style, finding and distinguishing a “vibe” all my own has definitely been a tough but necessary process!
I’m currently playing showcases and gigs in and around Los Angeles promoting my own music, while also working as a session singer for TV & movies. I also have a “day job” doing social media for Live Nation, which mostly just pays the bills, but also keeps me in the loop of what’s what in pop culture and music. However, pursuing my ambition to flourish as a solo artist is the main focus. I’d say my sound is firmly rooted in pop and RnB, but definitely holds hints of jazz and country too. I topped off a busy year and moved into 2020 with a brand new single release (my very first). Still continuing to write, record, perform, and release more songs very soon!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I can honestly say I’ve been singing, dancing, performing for my ENTIRE life, and I still haven’t reached some of the “big” goals I’ve set for my life. However, when I look back on everything I’ve accomplished thus far, and I truly think about it, I’m really proud. It’s taken me a long time to get to a point where I’m not so bogged down by what I haven’t yet accomplished, but be proud of everything I have. So that’s my biggest advice. Enjoy the journey, and celebrate every little “win”. Trust me, any breakthrough, big or small, is important and can feed your soul, your musicality, your journey, in surprising ways.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Since I don’t quite fall into any specific genre as an artist, I’d say that’s my specialty. That I don’t feel the need, nor do I ever want, to be put into a box, style wise. I love that I’ve learned to embrace the different facets of my voice and my writing. I really look up to genre-bending artists who have changed over time. Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Prince – they never stayed the same for too long. I think that’s what makes them legendary, and I hope that I can bring some of that magic to my music as well.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
BOOOOOKKKSSSSS!!! Any kind! I try to read as much as I can lately. Getting my head out of my electronics has been a big struggle for me, but the more I do, the better I feel.
