Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Huber.
Angela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After finishing my undergraduate degree in psychology with a minor in health sciences from UCSB, I took a few years off to figure which direction I wanted to go. During that time, I met a friend who was studying to become an acupuncturist. I enjoyed talking with her about health and found so much wisdom in her perspective and approach to health. She inspired me to start learning about acupuncture, and Chinese medicine on my own. After doing some research, I decided to check out schools. Next thing I knew I was enrolled at Emperors College in Santa Monica and never looked back!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There’s been some struggles along the way for sure. It is a very challenging path, although it comes with its rewards. The biggest challenges after graduation were learning the ropes of how to run a business. There are many decisions to make and having never run a business before, it’s a lot of trial and error. You just do what you think is best and learn from your mistakes.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about At Peace Acupuncture – what should we know?
After finishing my master’s degree, and starting my business, I decided to go back for my multi-specialty doctorate from Emperors College. In my clinic, I most commonly treat people with pain issues. Headaches, back and neck pain, joint pain and sports injuries are most common. I also work with women’s health and fertility, as well as oncology, and autoimmune conditions. In addition to acupuncture, I do a lot of other modalities like cupping, electro-stim, Gua sha, and ultrasound during treatments if I feel like my patient may benefit. I also prescribe lifestyle changes such as meditation, or dietary changes. I’m a big proponent of herbal medicine so I’ll often send patients home with a prescription.
One of the most rewarding things I’ve been so fortunate to experience was getting the opportunity to volunteer at a natural birthing clinic in Indonesia where I provided acupuncture to the underserved. That was unforgettable and something I hope to do more of!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Of course, my dear friend Christine Dionese, deserves all the credit for inspiring me to go down this path. She has been a mentor, cheerleader, and supporter from the very beginning. But along the way there have been many others, too many to name, including all my teachers at Emperors College as well as my friends and colleagues from my cohort in doctorate program who had a huge influence on me.
