Meet Nate Kohrs of eKo Lab Music Production in Downtown Arts District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Kohrs.

Nate, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my musical career in New York City. I worked as a recording and mix engineer at Downtown Music Studios in SoHo before deciding to go out on my own as a producer and film music composer. I produced a number of albums for singer/songwriters and bands in New York and also composed music for several independent films and commercials.

At the same time, I was helping a friend build a recording studio in his small apartment in Brooklyn. It was through that process that I researched and learned about the best ways to build recording studios, from materials to construction to assembly. I then went on to help with several recording studio builds and eventually was hired to design and consult for a broadcast facility in upstate New York.

In 2015 my wife Molly received a job opportunity in Melbourne, Australia, so I moved there with her for three years and continued to score feature films, documentaries and commercials. In 2018 we moved to Los Angeles where we met Sarah and Jason Earnhardt and decided to collaborate with them on building a small production and recording facility in their co-op, As We Dwell in the Arts District. Over the next several months, we collaborated to design and purpose-build a facility that would perfectly suit our needs as a producer and film composer. We decided to call the studio space eKo Lab, because of the musical ‘laboratory’ environment we set out to create.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There were some bumps in the road when it came to construction. Although I have experience in building studios, there are always unforeseen challenges… budget considerations, maintaining a construction timeline and obtaining some specialized materials were all challenges that presented themselves. Once construction was complete, building a new client base in the LA area was our next challenge.

eKo Lab Music Production – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
eKo Lab is a business built around Nate’s production and composing skills. We help bring singer/songwriters through the entire album making process, from help with songwriting to demos to full arrangement and production, to mixing and mastering. A songwriter can walk into eKo Lab with nothing more than some song ideas, and walk out with a professionally produced album. We also specialize in writing music for film, television, commercials and trailers. Nate has composed music for documentaries, feature-length dramatic films, short films, as well as countless commercial and branding projects. eKo Lab is unique because we are a small, boutique production studio and can give our full attention to every project we work on. Large and small projects are all treated with the same individualized care.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I consider success to be having a positive interaction with clients throughout the music making process and having them leave with a product that everyone is happy with. I think the best marker of success is repeat clients.
