Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Muro.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Monique. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Sure! So I got my start at a 9 to 5 in online advertising. About six months in, one burning question kept surfacing in my head, night after night: What else is there?
I had a lot of anxiety coming home each night after work because I wasn’t sure what to do with my time. So I started a personal blog. That satisfied my itch to write and to have something to do in general.
Sometime later, after I got really good at blogging, including the technical aspect of getting it up and running, I started doing virtual assistant work on the side for online business owners who weren’t as tech-savvy. That work also included helping them proofread their online content.
After a few months into virtual assistant work, I realized I loved proofreading much more than virtual assistant work, so I started taking on more freelance proofreading work until I was able to quit the 9 to 5 and proofread full-time. Woo hoo!
It was around this time that I had the idea for a proofreading business – but not just any proofreading business, a proofreading business that focused only on online course content.
Over the years, I’d had some clients ask me to proofread their online course content, and I loved it. And I knew this was where I wanted to set up camp career-wise for the foreseeable future.
I knew I could use my proofreading skills to help course creators deliver error-free content that their students would love. And that’s how my business, Proof Mango, was born!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. I started out with an idea and decided to “go it alone” by trying every marketing tactic in the book to get Proof Mango up and running. I spent nearly two years working at it and came out the other end with only one client – womp, womp.
I took B-School by Marie Forleo, invested in courses to become a better proofreader, and had a $97/month subscription to Digital Marketer to become a better marketer. But none of it really helped. I was never sure which strategy to choose, and I didn’t have much belief in myself.
It wasn’t until I hired a business coach to help me kick things into gear that I’m finally starting to see some results. I wish I’d done it from the very beginning!
Please tell us about Proof Mango. What should we know?
Proof Mango helps online course creators find errors in their course that distract and diminish trust. I do this through proofreading and by taking their course as a student would, to see if there are any confusing areas or glitches.
Right now, the online course market is highly saturated. There’s a ton of people creating online courses, and you can find anyone to help you throw one together. But finding someone to help you make sure it’s a *quality* course that’s dressed to impress? That’s the tough part. And that’s where Proof Mango sets itself apart.
I like to think Proof Mango benefits both course creators and the students who enroll in their courses, in a very big way. On the one hand, it helps course creators put out better courses that help them look authoritative, and that they can charge more for. On the other hand, it gives the students who invest in these online courses a much better learning experience.
And when you have better learning experiences, you have online learners who actually *learn* something. They walk away from your course being able to make some kind of difference (hopefully).
We live in a time where anyone can share their knowledge online to make an impact (and a profit). And anyone can learn whatever they want, whenever they want, to *be* whoever they want.
The fact that I am able to contribute to both of these groups of people with Proof Mango is what makes me super passionate about this niche, and proud to be a part of it.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Persistence, definitely. Like I said, I spent nearly two years trying to get Proof Mango off the ground. For a minute there, she wouldn’t budge. But you just don’t give up.
I have a post-it on my computer that says “Never quit”. It just helps me remember that I’m not allowed to give up.
That and, of course, belief in yourself when the going gets tough. I don’t believe in myself a million times a day, but when you believe just enough to keep going, you’re halfway there. You’d be surprised the things people can accomplish with belief and nothing else.
