Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Foster.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a mother to my sweet daughter Gabbie, wife to my loving husband, Kindergarten teacher, cheer coach, soccer mom, loyal friend, sister, and daughter. God is the light of my life. I grew up in the projects in Jackson, MS. My environment or living situation never defined who I was or who I wanted to become. I’ve always wanted to educate and mentor young girls. I saw so many girls my age go down the path of destruction and I always said they might have made different decisions of they had a mentor or positive person in their lives. I had a mentor Mrs. Felt and parents who pushed me to be great. My mentor prayed with me, guided me, taught me, fussed at me, and cheered me on. I began Girls 2 Women Mentors organization three years ago. I have a daughter and I saw the need for girls her age to be apart of something positive and something bigger than them. I teach and I love teaching but mentoring and giving back is my passion. This organization means so much to me. With suicide rates, bullying, and depression surrounding our youth, it’s important to be a guiding light for them. I wake up daily and try to use my platform to influence and empower our youth!
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it did not begin as a smooth road but as soon as I gave it all to God everything began falling into place. His timing and patience is everything. Some struggles for my organization were finances, not having time for my family, letting go of people who don’t support you or believe in your dreams. Learning that my vision was not for everyone and staying focused on that. Also, educating my self on having a non-profit and finding the right people to help make my business grow. Thank God for good help because my team is why G2W became a success. My advice to any young girls or women beginning a business or organization is to hold on to the end goal and the vision because the process won’t look like that and it can easily break you or discourage you. Stay focused, find a team that can benefit you, pray for clarity and strength daily, and remember that “God made girls be two things… anything and everything!”
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Girls 2 Women Mentors story. Tell us more about the business.
Well, my career as an educator. I am a kindergarten teacher in Jackson, MS. I love teaching even though it has its struggles. I am a cheer coach at the school and I love doing that as well.
My lifetime career is as a mentor. I am the founder of Girls 2 Women Mentors, a nonprofit organization that empowers, educate, and mold young girls into becoming extraordinary women. For the past three years, I have hosted an all-girls mentoring summer camp for ages 5-16. During camp, we learn social skills, life skills, get tutoring, work on team building, tackle hard conversations, and the girls get introduced to a female in the career-field that interests them. I am known for the career bucket list. At the beginning of camp, we make a list of every one dream job/career. I reach out to the females in our community and they invite us to their jobs or come to visit the camp. This exposure to working black females such as scientists, doctors, missionaries, news anchors, athletes, artists, and so many more is the type of exposure our girls need. It’s one thing to see it on TV, but to get hands-on experience is always more effective. I think because I focus solely on girls in a tough city and the parents and girls become my family helps me to stand out. Girls 2 Women is not just a summer camp or monthly club its a lifetime membership of guidance and help. I love the girls and I will always be there for them.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Yes, I agree that media focuses on the hardships of women more than opportunities. There limitless opportunities for women but we have to work harder, be better, and balance more. I don’t feel there are opportunities that women are well-positioned for but I do feel that women are now realizing that any position is now for us. This year, women are leading the charts in entrepreneurship we’re creating our own opportunities.
