Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabby Gordon, Morten Kjær and Ronen Gordon.
Gabby, Morten and Ronen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Five years ago, Morten and I ( Gabby) met at The Musicians Institute in Hollywood, where we were hired to sing on a project. I went up and said “Hello’ and we quickly bonded over realizing we were two Danes, from the same part of Denmark no less, in Hollywood making music.
We decided to meet and write our first song together “Back to start,” in less than an hour. We ate danish pancakes and laughed and knew we were going to be great friends. A few months later we were both back in Denmark for a family visit and decided to set up some “Home Concerts” together. It was so much fun and we loved the intimacy we felt with our audiences, so we decided the following year to write more songs and do a “Home Concert tour.”
Not long after, Ronen joined us as our rhythmic backbone on drums and off we went playing in Southern California, Arizona, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Sweden, the Uk, Israel, and Switzerland.
As a DIY band, we do it all. Songwriting, recording, album artwork, booking of concerts, tour planning, setting up/tearing down our gear at shows, performing, merchandise and promo on Social Media.
It’s not easy to wear all the hats but we divide the tasks between us to be more efficient and help each other out to reach out goals year by year.
Over 200 concerts, 3 band CD releases, 2 music videos and countless memories later we have carved a little musical path for ourselves in a way that we are proud of.
We have a growing grassroots following of supporters mainly in Europe that open their homes to us and draw audiences locally. At a time when it’s hard for musicians to rise above the noise online or even make a living from their music, we feel grateful to perform so much to wonderful audiences who show-up and support what we do.
We tell a lot of stories, and sing duets and then enjoy socializing with our lovely hosts, and fans that sometimes travel far to see us.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some of the main challenges we deal with as a DYI band involves promoting our band. Every bit of momentum is generated by us and it’s an all-consuming project, that requires the patience and dedication of three individuals. Sometimes it would be nice if we had a pro team helping to get us on people’s radar. We feel proud to deliver a great live experience that wins people over but to get those butts in seats is a lot of work.
Also, while we are happy to get around and see new things and meet new people, the constant change can be a little hard on the body and mind. We try to rest and eat healthy foods and be self-aware on the road, so we know when we reach our limits and need a little downtime on a fast-moving train.
We’d love to hear more about your band.
We are known for our intimate live concerts in unique settings. We have performed in everything from castles to caves, barns, swimming pools, art halls, living rooms, and public music venues.
We sing vocal duets – soulful pop songs with thoughtful lyrics play groovy rhythms and tell stories. We also interact a lot with our audience and often get them to sing along.
Our fans love the close connection they have with us and often stay after a concert to share how much our music means to them in their lives. They ask for pictures, autographs, and CDs and ask when we’re coming back. We feel so grateful that we can make a mark like that in people’s lives.
I think what sets us apart is that we have performed so much in nontypical settings, with a dynamic show and won the trust of music lovers in a number of countries year by year who continue to open their hearts, homes, and venues to us.
Also, we often work with large choirs, (recently, 100+ singers for one event)who we teach our songs to and then perform with us at the concert. It’s a spectacular event and really inspiring to hear that collective “wall of sound.”
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck played a role in the sense that we all met randomly and liked making music together. That is the glue that holds it together.
I think our band has thrived on a combination of our hard work putting ourselves out there and from the people who respond to that and show up at shows and invite us back.
