Meet Jessica Gore of Competent Pup in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Gore.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jessica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m Jessica Gore, Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), owner and founder of Competent Pup. I moved to Los Angeles from Colorado and began my pup journey in the form of rescue with local non-profit organizations. Rescue work can be very emotional and seems never-ending at times. I wanted to do more to stay proactive and prevent pups from ending up homeless or worse while helping pet parents through education.

When I started to learn about the universal principles of learning theory that apply to all organisms on our planet, my passion kicked into high gear. I could not believe I didn’t have this information before – how we learn and build associations relates to everything we do, from relationships to education and emotional well-being. When we know better, we do better! As dog training remains an unregulated field in the United States, continued education is critical and I earned Certified Professional Dog Trainer status, CPDT-KA, represents the gold standard for ethics and techniques in the industry. I am also a Reiki Master, nutritionist, AKC CGC evaluator and more, all due to my enthusiasm for being a progressive educator, learner and well-rounded human. These are all aspects that I bring into my business as well; Competent Pup provides professional training, pupsitting and wellness services founded in progressive, science-based modalities.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being a femaleprenuer in Los Angeles is not without its inherent obstacles. If the road is always smooth, you’re going the wrong way. A good life is not without its challenges. Death, abuse and uncertainty are facts of life, but when you put your hat in the ring to help people, the stakes can be high at times. In the dog training and rescue field, we can not always connect with others in a way that is beneficial to a greater purpose in that moment. I can always help and improve a pup’s life or behavior, but there have been humans who have been unreachable, and this can be a struggle when teaching.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a progressive, science-based educator that uses the most functional and ethical pup training modalities available to affect behavior. There are many dog professionals to choose from, and many are using their own ideas to train or work with animals. My education, holistic perspective, and life experiences set me apart from other individuals in my industry. Competent Pup specializes in positive training, healing, and pup sitting services. We offer a variety of programs to work with pet parents and the different lifestyles ad schedules that exist in the Los Angeles area.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was precocious and creative with a pronounced interest in all things animals! Even at an early age, I loved learning new things and connecting with like-minded people.
