Meet Lauren Sanders of All Things Tall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Sanders.

Lauren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The summer before high school, I grew about 7 to 8 inches. I walked into 9th grade, standing at the height of 5’10. Everyone was no more than 5’5. I always felt like an outcast. I always felt the need to shrink myself or to appear smaller than I was. Not only was that ruining my posture, but it was also destroying my self-esteem. I was not asked to school dances, nor was I seen as the “pretty” girl in school (which is essential to a 14-year-old). It was also incredibly difficult for me to find clothes. I remember forever 21 coming out, and all of my friends at the time would be able to go in there and purchase a pair of denim or whatever they wished for that matter. I would watch them with such sadness. They would always ask me why I wasn’t trying anything on? I couldn’t find a way to say or to express to them that nothing fit me. By my senior year of high school, I grew another 2 inches; I graduated standing at about six feet.

I honestly do not know what defining moment I had that caused the perception of myself to change. I think I began to grow tired of beating myself up constantly for not being what I felt I needed to be or look like. I also had the idea of creating a world where I fit in rather than “shrinking” or modifying myself to fit into someone’s standard of beauty. All Things Tall is that world. My goal is for tall & curvier women to find a place where they find quality fitting clothing that FIT. Also, I want it to be a platform form “women who stand above the crowd” (my slogan) to showcase their talents & abilities. I want them to have a platform to show how strong they and to show that loving yourself is half the battle.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a clothing line/business has been by far the most challenging experience I’ve ever encountered thus far; Trying to get someone to purchase a designer pair of denim isn’t easy whatsoever I would think for any brand. I also feel the added weight of being a woman of color makes it all the more difficult. Most do not associate being black with “high quality.” I definitely struggle with that.

How does one sell a movement through apparel? I have yet to figure that one out, lol. It has been difficult to get women to understand that quality comes at a price. My denim isn’t cheap. But they will last. Anything of quality comes with a price & should last.

Success is measured by sales, money, accomplishments, etc. All of those would be great. More than great. But, what I want is longevity. I want my brand to be around and live beyond my unborn children, grandchildren, etc. I want it to be a movement, all of this has been QUITE the challenge.

And my mother passing away was by far the most heartbreaking/challenging experience I’ve ever had to overcome… but in all experiences, even those that are heartbreaking & traumatic, they can serve as preparation and a tool.

Starting your own business comes with a roller of emotions. An obstacle I have found is who to share those emotions with. I at most times feel detached from day to day life because my brain is constantly thinking and plugging away at what I can do next to make this work. How can I make this work with limited capital? I wish there was a self-help group for entrepreneurs. I would gladly join to sit there and just cry, lol. No one understands the mental hell you put yourself through attempting to start your own legacy.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was shy/quiet. I didn’t want to stand out any more than I already did. I always felt like the overgrown, ugly duckling so whatever I could do to not stand out I did. Ironically, I had a lot of friends.

I played soccer and ran track growing up. I was definitely a sports girl.
