Meet Jason Yu of CrossFit Intellect in Mid-City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Yu.

Jason, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in Beverly Hills, attending Beverly Vista Middle School and Beverly Hills High School. During high school, I began playing sports (football, wrestling, and track & field) and developed a passion for fitness. I attended college at Claremont McKenna College where I played football and majored in Economics-Accounting. After a few different jobs in accounting and real estate, I found CrossFit in 2012 and decided to pursue my true passion of fitness to become a personal trainer and CrossFit coach. I competed in CrossFit, coached at an affiliate, and trained personal clients for 3 years until I decided to open my own CrossFit affiliate in January of 2016.

My gym is called CrossFit Intellect and we are located in the Mid-City area at 5166 W. Pico Blvd. We just celebrated our one year anniversary and have a fantastic group of members who train hard and push each other daily. The community at CrossFit Intellect has grown into one I’m extremely thankful and proud to be a part of and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to open up my own gym!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
1) Initially, finding a location was a bit tricky. I had been looking for a space for over 9 months before I finally found a space.

2) I knew that building up a solid membership base would take some time, but I’d be lying if I said that there weren’t days early on when I worried about making ends meet.

3) I am also currently coaching all of our classes, so one of the biggest struggles has been the long hours. Luckily, I love what I do so every day is a lot of fun and I genuinely enjoy coaching all of our members.

Please tell us about CrossFit Intellect.
We are a gym, specializing in CrossFit. CrossFit is a fitness regimen with a focus on strength and conditioning, and we provide small group fitness classes that are instructed by a certified coach. What sets us apart is how we program our workouts and provide for well-rounded results. We don’t just make you sweat, but provide the tools to learn more about your body and maintain consistent growth, both mentally and physically.

I’m most proud of the community that we have here at the gym. We are a very tight knit group of friends and we hangout outside of the gym just as often as we do inside the gym.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have gotten into fitness sooner than I did. When I had a desk job, my passion was always what I was doing in the gym. I wish I had followed that passion sooner, which would have let me to CrossFit sooner and would have allowed me to open up my own gym earlier.
