Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Patalsky.
Kathy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Journey began back in 2007 when I found myself newly living NYC with my husband, and fully inspired by the vast culinary scene and abundance of #vegan restaurants, trends and community popping up. I started out by writing about hot topics in the media while crafting and self-publishing three children’s books under my brand The Lunchbox Bunch. Eventually, I found my way to one of my true loves – cooking. I spent many, many hours in my (tiny!!) NYC kitchen playing with ingredients and developing recipes. I taught myself food photography, joined Twitter (in 2008) and was on my way.
Today, I blog full time at HealthyHappyLife.com, run my other site Findingvegan.com, have two cookbooks and engage in creative side projects like screenwriting and photography.
Has it been a smooth road?
In the beginning, teaching myself photography was a big challenge, and I’m still learning every day. That’s part of what I love about creative careers. You are always growing and evolving in your craft.
Recently the saturation of the blogging market has been a big challenge. But I continue to find ways to innovate and press past the challenges because I love what I do so much.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I create content! My blog focuses on vegan recipes and photography. I also write about travel, blogging, wellness, my personal stories and life and more. I have written two cookbook, Healthy Happy Vegan Kitchen and 365 Vegan Smoothies. I also created and run FindingVegan.com – a community site with over 100,000 plant-based recipes to browse – submitted by bloggers from all over the world.
I like to think I bring a positive, very welcoming, open and honest vibe to the vegan blogger space. I also have so much experience working with brands and developing recipes and campaigns.
This career has taught me so much about myself. It has allowed me to grow and heal in many ways. And has allowed me to embrace and develop all the naturally creative and entrepreneurial side of myself. And maybe most profound to my experience with blogging, it has gifted me a space to share my stories – my human experience – and to allow myself to be vulnerable.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Oh man, this is the question I’ve been asking myself lately! What will I be doing in five ten years? I think the world will always need food and recipes and inspiration. I also think our online spaces are getting more vulnerable and real every day. We are leaning so much about the world and each other from the chaotic space that is the internet. I hope people start moving bag to blogs a bit more rather than getting all their main info and engaging on and from social media! But I think bloggers are doing a great job of balancing social media with our homes – aka our websites.
