Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Melgosa.
Alex, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out working by in the music industry. I promoted and marketed bands in Minneapolis, Minnesotsa before moving to Los Angeles. Here I fell in love with photography. I got my foot in the door by photographing for bands and record labels such as Universal, Republic Records, Def Jam and Capitol.
Currently, I specialize in lifestyle and fashion photography. My main focus is to have whoever I’m photographing, feel valued and proud of themselves. I believe everyone is unique and I want my work to represent the best of people.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like a lot of people deal with, moving to LA was a huge struggle at first. I didn’t know anyone and this would be the first time I’d be living more than 30 hours from my family back home in Wisconsin. I spent my first year working temp jobs and applying for full-time positions. I’d go to concerts multiple times a week and ask bands if they needed a photographer. I’d also spend time updating my portfolio so I could contact modeling agencies about possible test shoots. This is how I met most of the clients I have now.
Now, after three years of photographing here, I feel more confident than ever.
Please tell us about Melgosa Backstage.
Melgosa Backstage is a photography company I started in 2014. I specialize in fashion, lifestyle portraits and weddings. I also do conceptual work and create album covers for bands. I’m the most proud after walking away from a shoot and seeing a huge smile on my clients face. Nothing feels better than feeling accomplished and valued after a shoot.
I go the extra step by providing every detail of the shoot and making sure that everyone feels confident and empowered in the work I’m helping to provide. I make sure each client feels safe, valued and most importantly has the best time of their lives!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was in middle school, my older brother Matt and I would ride bikes to the local barge dock and jump into the Mississippi river from the top. I’ll never forget the first time I jumped and felt my heart race as I fell 30 feet into the water.
