Meet Tommy Spase

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tommy Spase.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I moved to LA during the late 80’s with the throngs of musicians that came to descend upon the Sunset Strip. Upon arrival, the band that I moved out with quickly broke up! I soon found myself in several different bands and over the course of many years, I was a member of two signed bands as a lead guitar player. Neither band ended up making much noise (pun intended) success-wise and dissolved before any noteworthy accomplishments were achieved in the public arena.

I had always been a songwriter and producer of my own material, and so I set out to form my own band and did so. The band, at that time, came close to getting a deal, but it never fully materialized. As time progressed I wrote, recorded, and produced several albums of my own material, formed bands around that material and played in and around LA. In more recent years, I have really evolved it into a very unique, theatrical, vaudevillian style that I describe as “Carnival Rock Opera”.

Through the advent and power of the internet, I have been building a significant and engaged international following. I have released two albums under this current musical incarnation and am getting ready to record our next, the biggest and best one yet, with the best band I have ever had! Good things!

Please tell us about your art.
My art in a word is music. Melody and lyric combined with theatrical performance to entertain and inspire. I write about the path of life, the ups and the downs, and the eternal and enduring nature of the soul. The metaphysical side of our existence and who we are beyond what the eye can see and what our senses can perceive. I create whimsical, mystical, theatrical, cosmic, vaudevillian rock adorned with clockwork-like lyrical flurries about the supernatural and the power of universal love, in a steampunk powered presentation.

I do it because it is my mission. To lift and inspire the listener with glimpses of the higher realms and the mystery of existence. To remind that we are all together here on this planet as we travel along and we are, in so many ways, one, in our happiness and sadness and hopes and dreams, difficulties and struggles. I hope people who listen will be touched deeply and entertained.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
The only advice I can give is jumped in with both feet. Do it 100% and get out there in the mix. If you are a musician and you don’t have a full band to play a club, go to open mics. Goto public areas like 3rd St, Promenade in Santa Monica where musicians are playing in the street. There are many online portals such as meet up.com or put a post up on craigslist. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself. Develop a thick skin and yet an open heart and mind.
